Inspiron 7720 doesn't boot sometimes

Hello!

I have quite a situation with my don't-remember-how-much old laptop (>3 years is for sure), which's Inspiron 17R 7720-6167 with dual boot Windows + Ubuntu on two different HDDs.

Not a long time ago, my computer started to not boot sometimes. Not boot means: power button glows all the time, hdds start to spin as I can hear, cpu n all started working, all leds started glowing correctly, but puff, and just... silence. Power button still glows, though, just as a side led for "Power". But it just silently does nothing. No hdds spinning, no "beeps" from BIOS, no glowing of other side led (except for Power one ofc). Oh, and power supply led glows ok too.

But, if I leave it for some time, laptop will likely boot. Diagnostics showed nothing particular: everything is ok, except not having a battery (got a warning for it 1y ago or so, didnt really need a new one) and short self test failure for the main drive. I will list SMART-test result for this drive below.

Other symptoms:

Noticed that Ubuntu sometimes freezes during any IO-heavy operation, such as copying of a lot of files/big files.

Encountered a few errors during copying on external drives, such as unremovable folders or something. E.g. I deleted folder with files, but the folder itself stayed not touched, and gave me 0x80004005 error out of blue next time I tried to delete. Standard Windows error fixing for drives fixed it, though.

Tryed removing memory. Beeps 2 times just as expected. But if I put it back, 4 times out of blue. Ok, I moved to another slot (have one 8gb module), worked ok. Strange.

It's not covered by guarantee, I guess, as I had, afaik, standard 1 year one. That's why I seek for help from you guys.

Thanks!

XPS 9550 Signature trackpad lifting

$

From my research it is now obvious I am just another of the multitude of 9550 owners whose machine has just gone out of warranty and the trackpad is beginning liftoff into space. the trackpad still works, right clicking is became more difficult a week or so ago, and now I see about 1mm of lift at the front edge. I would really like to remove the battery so no further damage is done to the trackpad, but that would probably void any right to repair or replacement.

I bought through Microsoft store in Australia, and after initially contacting them they have passed the buck and told me its out of warranty and that they will do nothing (note to self: don't ever buy another non-Microsoft product from Microsoft).

I am now based in Peru for work and have been trying to contact Dell here, but since the warranty on my service tag has expired I get no options on the website to actually talk to chat to anyone, nor to talk to someone in Peru.

What course of action should I take? Calling the states or Australia for more than 20 minutes would be more expensive than just purchasing a new battery online from ebay. I have seen online how dell is sending new batteries to people out of warranty because it is obviously a design flaw when the battery starts to destroy the rest of the device.

any advice on what to do?

When does a warranty for NBD with Complete Care mean mail it in to depot?

I have a laptop that Dell service cannot narrow down which part is bad.  The system still works with an external monitor. Since they can't decide if its the motherboard or the video card they want me to mail it to the depot.  I have NBD and complete care on this system.  Why should I be without a system for 3-5 days when my warranty is for NBD and complete care to boot.  Dell will not send a tech out with more than one part.  Why did I pay extra for a warranty Dell will not honor?

XPS15 dpc_watchdog_violation crashes

I have this same issue, at least twice a week.  What makes it even more annoying is that after the crash, all incremental file changes are lost, so our incremental backups have to run a full 2-hour job instead of a 2-minute one.  Coupled with the screen resolution issue that makes many applications too small to read (remote desktop for one), I'm seriously regretting our first Dell purchase.  In my view, persistent crashing makes the product not fit for purpose, hopefully Dell can fix this.

The computer works normally while being charged but as soon as I remove the adapter, the computer shuts down. The battery displays as 100% and battery manager says it's healthy. What should I do? If I remove the battery it would void the warranty with Best Buy.

Locked Out

Hi,

About 3 months ago I had my laptop stolen but the good news is I got it back.  My problem is the person who stole my laptop, changed the user account info as well as the password to log in at windows.  Is there a way I can fix this problem?  Can I do a factory reset?  I don't mind doing a factory reset so I can remove anything this person may have done.  How do I do a factory reset?

Thanks

Bootable problem with Dell 11-3168

I've got this laptop explicitly to run Kali Linux on it. I've succsessfully installed Kali with the USB, however "No Bootable Device Found" appears each time I'm trying to start it. (I've wiped the Windows 10 and diagnosed the system - everything appears to work properly). I've tryied to boot with UEFI with secure boot off - no luck. I've seen many unanswered questions like this - can someone help me please?!

Unable to upgrade laptop to tested compatible CPU, locked BIOS problem?

Dear community,

I have a very strange problem concerning two Dell Studio 1558 laptops. I am sorry for the long post but there is no other way to describe what happened.

The first laptop (i5 520M - 4GB ram - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 - 500 GB disk - 720p screen) worked fine for about 6 years until one morning I turned it on, the keyboard and the fan were working but the screen was black, no POST, no life signs. I tested the screen with the self-test and it was working as expected.

After some research on the net, calling a local authorized Dell repair shop, and testing (swapping ram etc.) I concluded that the integrated video card (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570) was burned out.

As the card is integrated and can't be replaced, I decided to buy a replacement motherboard. Instead I bought another (working) Dell Studio 1558 locally as it was actually more expensive to buy the motherboard on eBay and have it shipped from abroad. The Dell I bought was i3 350M - 4GB ram - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 - 500 GB disk - 1080p screen. The motherboard is supposed to be the same in both laptops, judging by the sticker tag next to the ram slots - CN-0CGY2Y.

As the board is the same I though that I can just swap the i3 for my old i5. The BIOS of both laptops was the latest version A12. I should also mention that some months ago I had upgraded the 4 GB (2x2GB) of ram on my i5 laptop to compatible 2x4 GB and it worked OK.

So me and my brother swapped the processors on the newly bought i3 laptop, put in the working 2x4 GB of ram and turned it on but we got 4 beeps - which indicates a memory read/write error. We took out the ram and got 2 beeps. We switched with the old ram, and the ram from the newly bought Dell - that didn't help, we had no beeps and black screen boot with 1 stick or 4 beeps with 2 sticks. We always tested the ram in the original combinations of two working sticks. Resetting the BIOS by pressing the power button with the CMOS battery out didn't seem to work either.

So we reverted back to the original configuration with the i3 and the laptop was working fine with the old 2x2 GB and the new 2x4 GB ram. So we hadn't done anything wrong to the motherboard.

After that we tested again with the i5 and the working motherboard and this time it gave a CMOS checksum error on POST asking us to press F1 to continue or F2 to save current configuration. So we pressed F2, saved the current config in the BIOS, which properly registered the i5 processor, and managed to log in to Windows 7.

Everything was fine until 15 minutes later when I got a "Page fault in nonpaged area" BSOD after which I rebooted and the laptop would again give 4 beeps on boot. It wouldn't start with the old ram from both laptops and the 2x4 GB. The pattern is always the same - if you insert just 1 stick in slot 1 you don't get any beeps but the laptop boots to a black screen and no POST. If you insert both sticks you get 4 beeps. After that if you replace the i5 with the i3, it shows the CMOS corrupted checksum message and if you press F2 it boots normally again.

I consider it unlikely that the i5 CPU is fried. We tested the motherboard from the i5 laptop with the i3 and it wasn't working - so the motherboard should be the problem as I concluded initially. And it is very unlikely that the board and the CPU burn out at the same time. And after all it booted to Windows once with the i5.

The laptop is working fine with the i3 and the 2x4 GB of ram. As there doesn't seem to be any hardware reason for this strange behavior I was wondering whether it has something to do with the BIOS. Maybe some Dell protection that prevents upgrades from i3 to i5 by the end user? Or some micro board revision preventing this upgrade?

I should note that the i3 laptop came with a Windows 7 license (which my i5 laptop didn't have) so I was wondering whether there might be some BIOS protection that detects mods to the system as the license is tied to one particular machine.

Can anyone help resolve this great mystery? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Latitude 7480 - Hard Drive - Not installed

We have a couple of 7480s intermittently fail to boot and report an error "Hard Drive - Not installed". Select the option to go into setup and simply exit and the system boots. Not a great solution but seems to work, occassionally requiring a couple of retries. Any others having the same experience or have a more effective solution?

All system drivers and bios are the latest available from Dell.

I've had this Laptop for about 2 yrs. When advised to update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 my touch screen stopped working. I've tried to reinstalling it from the disk. But as soon as I take the disk out the program disappears out of the device manager. Funny, with the disk in the DVD tray the HID Compliant Touch Screen works. Way is this happening? Why does it disappear?

Dell XPS 9550 TouchPad is lifted. Bulged battery?

The TouchPad in my Dell XPS 15 is partially lifted. Based on some Google searches this seems to be caused by a bulged battery. I looked up the specs on the laptop and the battery brand is Simplo, which matches the brand of the problematic batteries.

Is this dangerous? What can I do to have this fixed? My warranty expired a few months ago, but I don't want a potential fire hazard on my desk.

Can the XPS 13 QHD (4K) Internal Display be set to display at resolutions of 1920x1080, 1600x900 and 1366x768?  (To be clear, I'm asking about the built in 4K display, *not* an external monitor attached to the XPS 13).

Thanks!

Latitude E7470 RAM Upgrade

Hello,

I want to upgrade my E7470's RAM from 1x8GB to 2x8GB. On the Dell website another slot for 130€ is recommended, but I was wondering if I could use another memory module with the same DDR-speed (2133MHz) of the same type (SODIMM DDR4) along with the default RAM. For example, the Kingston ValueRAM KVR21S15D8/8 is much cheaper. Or the Crucial CT8G4SFD8213.

Best regards,

Need Help! Latitude E6430 CPU Heatsink fan doesn't turn on

Hi,

I have a Latitude E6430 laptop and the CPU Heatsink fan doesn't turn on. I have ran the diagnostics and it says its running and at 2800 RPM. I have removed the bottom plastic cover and made sure the fan was clean, and tested the fan with a battery and it works.

I have tried the latest BIOS A21, the oldest BIOS A03, and some in between.

With power saving mode on and max cpu setting set to 50% the idle temperature is 60 C. And with cpu settings at 100% it goes above 70 C just staring at the desktop.

I have reinstalled a few different versions of windows and decided to go back to windows 7. None of the other versions had an effect on the fan.

Any help would be appreciated.
