XPS 9530 Problems with Intel Rapid Storage after HDD replacement.

$

I recently replaced the stock 1TB HDD in my XPS 9530 laptop with a 2TB HDD and since the replacement, I get the BSOD with ERR_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (iastor.sys) whenever I boot. I haven't found an easy way to disable the Intel Rapid Storage driver and the one time I tried to mess around in the BIOS, it wouldn't boot properly and I had to revert to the original settings.

Can anyone tell me how to disable or fix the driver on my XPS 9530 running 8.1?

Slow Performance, Lagging

Hi all i'm using fedora 23 on dell inspiron 5567  with core i7 and 8 gb memory but fedora lagging in startup and also while doing some action.

Inspiron 15R touch screen laptop is apparently dead & won't turn on!

I have an Inspiron 15R touchscreen laptop that will not turn on at all now. I've tried clearing the RAM. I've tried taking out the battery & attempting to power up with just the AC adapter & nothing. I tried plugging in the AC adapter while holding down the power button...nothing. My warranty ended in January, go figure. I put off servicing this due to health reasons and now it seems from everyone else's issues with this laptop that I'm "SOL." I bought this laptop just for creating graphic designs & editing photos & videos. I barely got to use the laptop to be completely honest and now I honestly don't know what to do. If I lose all of this work from all these past years, I can't imagine where I'm going to be able to start again.

Not to mention my backup Dell laptop is now also not starting. It doesn't recognize the battery, OR the AC adapter. When I tried to remedy that issue, Windows wouldn't start. So I'm out of options, & all of my laptops. My 3rd older version of a Dell laptop overheated, fried the screen, & all the necessary connections on the inside.

I'm now typing this from my iPad mini, a piece of equipment that has actually stayed reliable for me. I never wanted to admit it, but now I see first hand why people prefer Apple over PC's. I don't have time to worry about customizing every single detail about my devices & operating systems. All I know is that I need reliable platforms to carry out my work for myself, and my clients; Dell has definitely jeopardized my entire business with these issues. I think it's safe to say that someone needs to be working on more viable solutions to help us customers get what we paid for. I expected more coming from a client of Taradata.

If anyone else has had any success, please let me know. Otherwise I think it's time for me to try to figure out how to invest in some new Apple products. Dell laptops have now been a huge headache, roadblocks, & letdowns to me working towards graduating college, starting up my own business, & now fulfilling orders & deadlines to important clients & customers of mine. Let's hope by the end of this, I still have any clients to attend to.

Unable to reach support or get quotation

Hello,

Please read until the end, I spent hours trying to get a quotations to repair my computer and never got any answer.

I have power issues with my laptop and need to replace motherboard (I tried with a colleague battery and power cable and it doesn't fix anything. My computer is a professional laptop and the only way to start it, is to remove the primary battery and power cord and place a secondary battery in the connector used by professional dock. However to charge this battery I need to disconnect it and charge it separatly with the power cable so I can only work for the length of this battery).

I have this issue for long time, I already tried to reach dell support for this when my computer was under warranty (tracking number 2931266-14294833) but got no answer both by email or phone.

I moved to Hong Kong and I called customer support in Hong Kong when it was under warranty, I had to send a request to transfer computer warranty to hong kong (it takes 7 working days, I was supposed to get a reply once done and never got any.

I called maybe 20 times support but here in Hong Kong when you are an English speaking customer you get redirected to Singapore to an English speaking line because the quotation service only handle mandarin speaking customers.

In Singapore, people tell you they don't handle Hong Kong customers and redirect you back to Hong Kong where they tell you quotations are only done by a team in Mainland China speaking only mandarin. It's an infinite loop.

I gave up when it was still under warranty because it is so complicated and waited few month.
Now warranty doesn't work anymore, but I still want a quote to repair my computer even if I need to pay. I tried again 4 weeks ago, thinking I was too weak to give up last time, I called 3 times a week for 4 weeks in the last month and still didn't manage to get a quotation or a price to replace my motherboard.

I sent email to support on your website and got no answer, called, tried everything, went from team to team in all the countries around and I couldn't even receive a quote on my mailbox. The only thing I didn't try yet to repair this computer is to post  a message on this forum. Hope I will get a reply and someone will contact me.

Regards,
Pierre

The Dell SupportAssist keeps trying to install (I have an XPS 2-in-1 9365):

Chipset (Intel integrated sensor solution driver), v 3.10.100.3363.A01

Network (Intel 8265 WIFI Driver) v 19.50.1.5.A04

However, it looks like the install works, then asks for a reboot, but then SupportAssist keeps asking to install it again. What is going on?

Dell M.2 FAQ regarding AHCI vs RAID ON, Storage Drivers, M.2 Lanes, Performance and more

$

Good day Dell Community,

Over time I’ve received a lot of questions about M.2 drives so I wanted to share some of what I have learned. I will explain in a kind of question/answer format:

Question:

What is Dell’s scope of support for the Samsung and Toshiba/OZC NVME drivers posted on these Manufacturers’ websites?
Toshiba/OCZ:https://ocz.com/us/download/ (To get the NVME driver select OCZ RD400/400A in the drop down)
Samsung:http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools.html
Note: Samsung’s explanation of what their NVME driver actually does is on page 22 of the following document: http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/downloads/document/Samsung_SSD_950_PRO_White_paper...
Keep in mind:
• There exists Dell branded OEM Samsung and Dell branded OEM Toshiba M.2 drives as well as               non-Dell-branded Samsung and non-Dell-branded Toshiba retail drives
• The drivers in question linked above will load for both Dell OEM drives and retail drives alike
• The Samsung and Toshiba/OZC drivers in question can only be used when running in AHCI mode
• These drivers do not apply when running in RAID ON mode as the M.2 drives will be operating under IRST in RAID on mode
Answer:
Dell does not support the Samsung and Toshiba/OZC drivers for use in AHCI mode. Dell systems with Dell OEM Samsung or Dell OEM Toshiba drives running in AHCI mode will use a Windows inbox driver called stornvme. Stornvme is the driver Dell supports in AHCI mode. Use of the Samsung and Toshiba/OZC drivers will ultimately be decided at end user discretion.

Question:
What are some differences between AHCI and RAID ON modes?
Keep in mind:
• Dell systems ship from the factory with the SATA operation mode set to RAID ON
• There exists M.2 SATA and M.2 NVME ( PCIE ) drive types
• Some Dell system models will support both M.2 SATA and M.2 NVME ( PCIE ) drive types while other     Dell system models will only support M.2 SATA drives
• If a Dell system’s M.2 connector supports NVME there will usually be backwards compatibility with         M.2 SATA drives
• The RAID ON controller and AHCI controller each have different hardware IDs and therefore each controller will require different INFs in order to point to other needed files and resources

-RAID ON drivers = IRST drivers with naming standard iaStorAC
-AHCI drivers = naming standard iaAHCIC

Dell’s PreOS IRTS and AHCI drivers can both be found in the following package: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=CRRKJ&fileId=368088204...

Extracted view:

Note: This package also has an installer EXE for updating to this 15.2 driver if already loaded up into the OS.
Answer:
A new host interface known as NVMe was launched together with Gen 7 (Intel CPU) platforms. This new host interface was built from the ground up for SSD. The host detects on boot up if the storage device is a SATA or PCIe device and then switches the software stack accordingly. Since the host cannot assume all storage devices implement the AHCI host interface the necessary controller is then pushed to the device itself and loaded at boot time. The illustration below describes this.
RAID ON mode: enables the port remapping hardware in the Intel CPU. The remapping hardware is necessary for the Intel RST driver to load the NVMe controller provided by the SSD against the Intel AHCI controller in the CPU. This is required for the Intel RST driver to enumerate NVMe SSD. Also enables support for RAID 0/1/5/10 ( RAID level availability varies by system model ).
AHCI Mode: In this mode NVMe SSDs are enumerated by StorNVMe which is the Windows inbox driver. Implying, that in this mode the NVME drive does not work with the motherboard’s AHCI controller, also shown in the below illustration:

Below, I have outlined what the storage devices and drives look like in device manager for both M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIE drives, in each operating mode.
M.2 SATA drive when running in IRST RAID ON:

M.2 SATA drive when running in AHCI mode:

M.2 PCIE drive when running in IRST RAID ON:

M.2 PCIE drive when running in AHCI mode:

Question:

Is there any performance difference between running an NVME drive in RAID ON mode VS. AHCI mode?
Answer: Based on the explanation on differences between RAID ON and AHCI above, I believe the answer to this is ‘no’. I’ve taken benchmarks below using CrystalDiskMark.
Benchmark Conditions:
• Precision 3510 with a Dell branded Samsung PM951 PCIE 4x drive
• Windows 10Px64 1703 (Creators edition)
• All system drivers updated through Dell Command Update
• One test in RAID ON running IRST 15.2 driver
• One test in AHCI running default stornvme driver
• One test in AHCI testing with Samsung NVME driver
• Power plugged in and all performance and power options at Windows defaults

RAID ON Test results with an NVME drive:

AHCI Stornvme and NVME drive:

AHCI mode with Samsung’s driver:

Question:
How can I tell how many lanes my M.2 PCIE drive is running on?
Keep in Mind:
• Some M.2 ports will support only 2 PCIE lanes of bandwidth while other M.2 ports can support 4 PCIE lanes of bandwidth
• The amount of M.2 PCIE lanes a system has available can depend on processor and/or motherboard
• 4 lane capable M.2 drives are typically backwards compatible with 2 lane ports but will suffer performance loss as a result of fewer lanes of bandwidth
Answer:
You can find out how many lanes a PCIE drive is running by using a program called HWiNFO
https://www.fosshub.com/HWiNFO.html
Note: Dell does not support this HWiNFO program. This is just a utility I’ve personally found/used and wanted to share.

Question:

When I go to the Dell website to purchase a PC I see ‘drive classes’ when selecting an M.2 drive. What does each class mean?
Keep in mind:
• The drive class standard as seen on the Dell website and below, is a storage device identification standard created by Dell
Answer:
Below is a chart of what each drive class means:

Question:
Why can’t I set a hard drive password on my NVME drive?
Answer:
There are 2 types of M.2 drives. M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIE ( NVME ). HDD password availability for each type is as follows:
M.2 SATA drives are provided hard drive password support from system BIOS.
M.2 PCIE drives are not provided hard drive password support from BIOS. This is working as designed.
Note: M.2 PCIE drives can operate normally even when SATA operation in BIOS is disabled. Hard drive password support is also not provided to M.2 PCIE drives in this mode. (Figure 1)

Question:
Where can I find more information if I want to upgrade my Dell to M.2?
Answer:
The following post contains Dell M.2 / NVME Specifications And Upgrade Requirements For Latitude, XPS, Precision Mobile and Optiplex:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19992358
Included in this document you'll find:
• needed part numbers in order to upgrade
• number of total internal drives supported for mentioned models
• how many M.2 PCIE lanes are available on mentioned models

Hi all.   .how you doing?

i have the dell inspirion 1525.

recently i have changed the ram . the three blue lights by the power button give me the code for the ram problem.

so i got a 2nd hand ram x2 & changed them, then the system came on & worked good.

before this...

every now n then the laptop would freeze or crash.

so, i got a 2nd hand hard drive (from a place i would say is a decent place, i got hard drive for my ps3 & got my sisters hp laptop ,its about 2yrs old now..)

& put this hard drive into my dell 1525, the laptop came on but nothing really would work, so i found out that it needs drivers for ..-.. wireless card.. -. sound card..-. & other thing's.

so i put the old hard drive back in & it works but every now n then it goes down.

before it completely does..

can i copy my drivers that are ...

go into... my computer...

..then into,, OS (c)

..then into.. drivers..

then a number of folders are on the right hand side..

when i click on a folder, a number of things in this folder open.

.. can i just copy a main folder from the laptop to a usb flash drive..?

or do i have to copy each 1 in the main folder to a usb flash drive.?

..

the put in the other hard drive & the copy the files from my usb flash drive.

will this work.?

help please...thanks all...sorry for the long message, its my best way of explaining.

thanks all...

Bluetooth not available after Driver/Windows update.

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 15 9560.  Until recently I have been using a Logitech MX Anywhere 2 mouse which is paired to the laptop's bluetooth (BT).  A few days ago, however, I noticed the mouse did not work.

On further investigation I found that the laptop's BT was not on and the button to activate it had disappeared from the windows 10 action centre panel thing.  I have checked the device manager and the BT section has disappeared; on viewing hidden items there is no BT hardware entry.

I recently updated some drivers following an notification from the Dell Update service. It seems very likely that the updates and loss of BT are related.  The updates were primary Intel chipset related stuff (I cannot find an update history in the Dell Update software so I'm not 100% sure).

I tried to use system restore yesterday from several previous points created over the last few driver and windows updates, but all the restores failed.  I tried also to do the restore by booting windows into troubleshooting mode; same result.  Checking again today, and now all the system restore points have disappeared so that option is gone even if it had worked.

I tried to do a check using the Dell diagnostic software but it says there is no BT hardware to check.

I got the latest BT drivers directly from Qualcomm (10.0.0.309) but their installation made no difference.  I also reinstalled the drivers using Dell Support (Killer Wireless AC Driver 10.0.0279) - no joy.

I tried rolling back to the previous 'Intel(R) Management Engine Components Installer' driver to no avail. Going back to the latest (11.6.0.1047) also changes noting. I suspect this driver merely implements all the other intel sub-component drivers and that they may need to be rolled back, but I haven't a clue where to start and I'm not even sure what these drivers do.

All other drivers are up to date according to the Dell Support software.  All Windows updates have been installed.

I'm frustrated. In addition to this problem I previously had to seek out separate Intel graphics drivers to stop the stuttering problem.  I do not feel I should have to be spending an inordinate amount of time doing this sort of thing for a premium, relatively new (bought in Match) off-the-shelf computer.  Do Dell not check drivers before rolling them out through Dell Update?

Can anyone help?

-Dave

Inspiron 15 5000 series won't power up

Shut down my computer last night. It was nearing low battery power, but wasn't dead 5% or so. Woke up this morning. Plugged it into the charger, and it won't turn on. The white LED at the front of the computer is on fine though. Tried with just the battery, no light no power. With just the cord, also no light, no power. Light only comes on when both are in, but still no power or any signs of life other than that little light. Is the issue with the battery or the cord and how do I find out which?

I'm interested to hear about your experience with this.

Do you use fingerprint recognition? How does it work for you?

Mine is terrible, it doesn't work or is very slow.

I'm interested to know if this is a fault with my PC or normal for this reader.

thanks

So Alienware was approved for an exchange on the 17th of June. Today was June 27th and I have heard nothing. I have had my computer less than 24 hours and had to send it in. Who can I call to find out what the heck is going on? Technical support keeps telling me that they are not the ones who are handling it.

I've a  Studio XPS M1640 and when I run the built in diagnostics I get error 0142.  I've replaced the drive and still get the error.  The laptop is out of warranty.

I can't get into the BIOS as I don't know the password.  I've tried disconnecting the internal battery and leaving it a few days, but the laptop has still retained the password protection.

Can anyone help?

I just purchase a new DELL E5480 and facing few issue after installing windows 7. I need another permanent solution as my company will need to buy another batch of This laptop and we wont upgrade to Win10 for time being due to it limitation

1. Touchpad not detected & Graphic card driver not updated.

2. Annoying Hardware not supported pop out and Windows update show unable to update driver message.
Solution - Uninstall Monthly Rollup Update KB4022719. Need another permanent solution, in future similar update might contain together with some critical update, thus we cannot simply disable Monthly Rollup update

Hi there

I'm trying to setup the Dell XPS 15 9560 and Wacom Ciniq Pro 16 together.

I've connected the USB-C from the top left port of the Wacom into the laptop. This gives me 4k resolution working screen on the Wacom, however the pen does not function. Wacom Desktop Center does not detect the tablet.

Does anyone have a solution to get the two working together?

Inspiron 5521 BIOS update failed; laptop bricked?

Hi -- on an Inspiron 15R 5521, on Widows 8, I wanted to do a reinstallation of Windows. Ran into difficulty getting that to work, so went to Drivers & Downloads. It suggested a Bios update. I downloaded and ran it. It said the current BIOS version was A06 and it would update to A14.

It got 25% of the way into the Update, and failed.

I left it on for a few hours in the stupid, vain hope it would somehow spring back to life by itself. Eventually disconnected power, removed the battery, reinstalled both and tried to reboot. No boot, nothing on the screen.

From what I can find, this model does not support BIOS recovery.

Is there some other way to re-update the BIOS? This is extremely frustrating -- I was just trying to go back to a clean OS install before selling it -- now Dell's software has provided me with an unsellable brick!
