How to factory restore Dell XPS 9560? Restore Images don't appear to do that...

0

Hello,

I've tried two different approaches with regards to completely factory restoring the laptop back to how it was out of the box.

1)  When the laptop was new, I immediately made a recovery image using the dell utility - this resulted in a USB thumb drive that was called "Recovery" - using this thumbdrive restored windows and the dell drivers but does not appear to truly but the laptop back to factory state.  As an example, the default wallpaper doesn't match what it was out of the box, instead its a windows default background.   There's a few other things that doesn't match how it was when brand new and out of the box.

2)  I downloaded a rather large ISO file off the Dell Support site, used the Dell utility and copied it to a USB thumb stick.   Same thing, it doesn't appear to truly return the machine back to how it was out of the box (Dell wallpaper isn't present, Dell utilities aren't present).

Is there something wrong with the factory restore images or am I not doing something correctly?  According to support, these images will "return it exactly to how it was out of the box" - doesn't appear its really doing that.

Thanks!

17R SE 7720 --> cannot update BIOS under win10

Hi,

I downloaded the latest (and older) versions of the BIOS update (e.g. A17) and I tried to update BIOS by running the exe under win10 and I even created a bootable devise following DELL instructions.

Both run through, but while booting no update happened. I checked windows logs, but no indication whatsoever.

Does anyone had the same problem and can help?

Dell xps 13 won't turn on - wrong diagnosis by Dell technician - ? fraudulent repair quote

0

Having owned the XPS for just over 1 year (with the warranty just expired), it decided not to power on anymore.

Looking at the forum, the problem seems to be rather systemic with the XPS model (engineering issue?) and there is almost daily a comment regarding this in the forum.

(This is a description from another user, but identical to my problem: "...I get nothing when pressing the power button and it has now been off for 1 hour. I have tried battery in + AC, battery in alone, no battery + AC and none of it works. When the AC power is connected the charging light does not come on either. No indication as to what the issue is, it wasn't hot, there wasn't a burning smell, had only been on for ten minutes, had a full battery, was AC connected and the AC adaptor is fine (it has the normal blue glowing light)....")

Anyhow, I had a about 20 email exchanges with Dell tech support over a period of 2 weeks asking for help to resolve the issue. No constructive answers at all. Finally, I identified  the local Dell repair centre and brought the device there. The technician looked at the LED error code and diagnosed "motherboard failure". They still refused to repair on-site, but advised me to await quotation through Dell tech support. Quotation came 2 days later: equivalence of 886 USD! (That is just 300 USD less than what I paid for the device 1 year ago...) They demanded advanced payment before any repair.

I decided to get a second opinion from an independent IT guy. That person did some servicing (drained residual charge from capacitors, "flea power performance"). Cost: 11.7 USD.

I have some serious issues with all this:

1. The non-start up issue seems a systemic problem and Dell should own up to it and provide free repair beyond the warranty period. Such an expensive device is not meant to be used just for one year!

2. The tech support is below par.

3. It may be just gross incompetence on the technician's part, but I also cannot exclude an attempt at defrauding customers with inappropriate repairs.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Dell XPS15-9550 battery (4GVGH) expanding

Just 15 months ago I bought a new Dell XPS15-9550 direct from Dell. The top model (i7 processor, ultra-HD display). Expensive, but a quality laptop, with I assumed many years of life ahead.

Then a month ago the battery (a Dell type 4GVGH 84 Wh 11,4 V) started expanding, pushing the touch pad up and out of the case. A little research on the net showed this is a known problem with this battery. I demounted and disposed of the battery – I wasn’t going to risk a fire or worse.

I knew that Dell only offers a 1 year warranty on the battery, so I knew I would have to pay for a replacement battery. But I naively assumed I could get hold of replacement parts for an expensive 15 month old laptop. After all the 9550 was still being sold on the Dell site until very recently.

I now discover that Dell no longer offers batteries for the XPS15-9550, nor are they available from anyone else here in Denmark or in Europe. I can buy a “copy” from China, but I’m not comfortable with that.

I can still use the laptop with external power, but . . .

Dell – this is not acceptable.

Dell Inspiron 7720

I would like to join this discussion ,I also have a Dell Inspiron laptop 7720 that has a BIOS issue. I have read many issues with this on this great forum, looks like there are some very knowledgeable people here and my hope is that I may get an answer to my particular issue.

If i try to boot computer it brings me to

Boot mode is set to: UEFI:Secure Boot:on

Windows Boot Manager

I can get to BIOS in setup and verion is A16,everything on that page is highlighted in Blue . I enter Boot in setup and

Boot priority  Order

UEIF Boot and secure boot is enabled.

Legacy option disabled

Boot lis option UEFI

Add Boot is blue - can"t access it.

If I can figure out how to add photos I will.but basically what happens is if I try to change Boot order it comes up with a screen that has a password hint.I contacted Dell support and after spending some hard earned cash they gave me a password to install and made me purchase a USB software stick to reload OS Win 8.1. All that said and done , still nothing worked.I was told that they can't help me.So what do I do here , use it as a boat anchor or is there a fix,I was told BIOS has to be re flashed but it won't boot to a usb stick or any other device.I was also told maybe it needs a new BIOS chip but I think it may be something in the NAVRAM . Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

Dell XPS 15 9550 won't boot

I have a Dell XPS 15 9550 that will no longer boot-up.  Prior to this occurring, my boss was attempting to reformat this laptop with a Dell provided Windows 10 USB flash drive, P/N 55YG7_A00.  In attempting to restore from the USB media, Windows setup stated that there was a problem with the setup, at which time he attempted to reboot.  The laptop has not booted since.

The laptop, when you power it on, will simply show a black screen; the POST does not appear to run, as the Dell logo is never shown (so I can't even get into F2 for setup or F12 for boot device selection).  The power button does light up when turned on, but will only stay lit for about a minute before the unit shuts down again (the internal fans turn off as well).  I can run the pre-boot display test by holding down the D key while pressing power.  That video test cycles through its color pattern about three times, and the laptop shuts down again.  No other pre-boot key combinations (holding down Fn) seem to work for me.

I have tried holding down the power button for a minute or more, just try a force reboot, in the event that the laptop or OS were stuck in some sort of state.  That does not work.  I am sure that the laptop is charged, as I had connected the AC adapter for over an hour at one point.  I have removed the back panel and disconnected the battery and tried to hold down the power button for 30 seconds to clear any residual power, but it still does not boot correctly.

I am not sure if the laptop somehow got stuck in the pre-boot environment that the Windows deployment media evokes, or if there is even a way just to get back into that environment from USB media (I created new USB media from Dell.com, the previous Dell issued USB drive apparently does not work for this laptop, likely due to it not being able to recognize the internal SSD).

I have seen other people reporting the same issue, and for many it was a dead motherboard.  It seems unlikely to me that a failed Windows 10 reinstall could fry the motherboard, or some other internal component, but I does appear as if the unit is bricked at this point.

Are there any ideas on what I can try to do here an resolve?  My alternative is to reinstitute the recently expired warranty for about $600, and have a Dell tech take a look at it.

Dell XPS 9560 CPU Throttling on Battery

Got the fully specced 9560, so far working fine when plugged in, but when it's on the battery the CPU is throttled under 1GHz which causes a lot of applications to slow down considerably. I've tried changing the power saving settings to high performance, checked the CPU settings in power savings and set them the same for battery and plugged in, but to no avail.

Does anyone know how to sort this out? It's ridiculous not to be able to use anything at full speed when the power isn't plugged in. I don't care if it extends my battery performance, I want to be able to actually work when not plugged in, even if it's only for a couple of hours.

Inspiron 7560 random shutdowns

I bought a new Inspiron 7560 about a week ago. The laptop shuts down automatically when on AC power ( works fine on battery). I initially thought it was due to flea power so I drained the flea power but still the same issue. Sometimes it shuts down within a few minutes sometimes works properly for days. I checked the bios power logs. There is a event - `Shutdown - AHCI power off`. Not sure what's going on?

Are the XPS 15 9560 issues fixed already?

Hi!

After I had to return 3! XPS 15 9560 because of audio crackling issues and the famous screen flicker issue, I'm wondering if Dell has now found a solution for those things, or if they are continuing to sell buggy machines.

But I wish the XPS 15 issues would be fixed now. Otherwise I have to buy the new Macbook Pro, coming in june probably.

Is there any progress on those issues? All three of my XPS 15 had those problems:

- Black screen flicker (screen randomly flashes black), as described on countless forum posts here and other hardware forums

- Audio crackling: My XPS 15 had the problem, that my 300€ headphones and my 700€ speakers had static noises / audio crackling, coming from the audio jack of the XPS 15 after and before sounds are played. Seemed to be some kind of energy saving mechanism from the drivers, that powered the audio jack off, when there is no sound. All suggested steps from dell didn't help

- Heat issues: The place above the audio jack became really hot

Any update here?

PS: I have to select the horrible reCaptcha pictures in this forum for 2 minutes until I can finally post. This is a usability / user experience-NO GO. Dell is really getting worse in quality for all aspects.

My Laptop touch pad stop working after critical update, I uninstalled the update but issue came back after few days and window update itself automatically. I tried installing generic synaptic driver that did not update the mouse driver, tried force update after extracting driver in a file, it also did not work. Finally I reinstall the BIO A10. Although I had same BIOS but it flash it again, and then reinstall the latest same touch pad driver from dell support side that was issued some time time 2015. Wasted 4 days and was ready to through out laptop off windows. Hope it help and save some time anyone one who has issue. Dell support is pathetic in this regard.

no pass through charging

Hello, I've tried two different usbc dongles that have pass through charging and neither work with my Dell xps 13 9365.  I've done the bios update and all current driver updates.  With only two usbc ports having pass through charging is pretty important.  I currently have the Satechi usbc hub where the hdmi and the usb3 ports work; just not the usbc pass through charging.  Any idea?

I know this is a little outdated, but need all the drivers needed and order to install with a fresh cd install of windows 7 sp1

I found the info here years ago and can no longer find it with listed drivers for the upgrade.

I installed windows 7 sp1 and the laptop does not work well, very slow. Did one at a time device driver and tried to update drivers, not any better.

I will do another clean install if I can get the needed info.

Thanks for your help

Revert to Windows 10 after Linux (XPS13)

Hi there,

I own a 2015 Dell XPS13 which got wiped at some point (including the system partitions) in order to install Linux. I'd like to revert back to Windows 10, but don't have any copies nor a rescue USB. Is there any chance I could download a copy from Dell somewhere? Or any other way to get it back to factory settings?

Many thanks!
