Dell XPS 15 Plugged in but not charging

0
0

So for the past few weeks my Dell XPS 15 doesn't charge when it is plugged in, and the battery gives the message "plugged in, not charging". I've looked at other similar threads and I've tried updating my BIOS and draining the batter while the computer is plugged in and nothing fixed the problem. What has been happening is that the laptop will eventually start charging after I leave it plugged in for 5-10 minutes but that has stopped happening. Is there any other fix someone can suggest to me?

XPS 15 9560 Fan Always On

Hi Guys,

I have very recently jumped on board the XPS train and purchased the latest and greatest Dell XPS 15 9560, the 2017 model. My configuration comes maxed-out with 32gb RAM and 1tb SSD drive, powered by Intel i7 Kaby Lake processor and equipped with the gorgeous 4K display.

And I wish everything was perfect, but I after only 36 hours of use one thing is abundantly clear - this machine is far from silent because the fan is ALWAYS on.

A couple of Chrome tabs and the Media Player in the background - fans are on. Watching a 720p movie - fans are on. Sometimes I close all programs and leave it running seemingly nothing - fans are still on!

I don't know if mine is a faulty model or they are all supposed to be like that? I have read other users claim their machines are "dead silent", and I felt confused and jealous.

What's funny is that my previous laptop - a 5-year old Samsung - was silent for the most part with fans kicking up only at heavy load.

I tried changing the Cooling Policy to Passive in Power Options, but that made no difference. Unfortunately, Dell doesn't even provide a Fan Tuning utility - just a small bit of software to have more control over the cooling policy.

I would encourage anyone with the same issue to come forward, and anyone with a solution to share it with the community.

Thanks

Pav

Latitude E5400 wifi switch.

I'm using a refurbished Latitude E5400 and for the most parts it's serving me well. I have just two issues with it. One is that it has a nasty habit of spontaneously switching off and then when I restart it the monitor comes on with extremely low brightness requiring me to restart it again at least once more in order to be able to see a normal display.

I'm not too worried about that for now because it's under warranty and as soon as I've finished a big piece of work I have to do over the next few weeks I'll be able to send it for repair and manage without it for a bit.

But the more immediate issue is that there is some sort of mechanical issue with the wifi switch. It tends towards keeping the wifi off unless I squeeze it really hard into the on position and make several attempts to let go such that wifi remains switched on. Wifi will go off again at less than a drop of a hat and it can be a real nuisance.

So my question is how much control that switch actually has. Does it control just one specific wifi adapter, or does it control whether or not the computer will use wifi at all? In other words, if I buy a USB wifi adapter without fixing the switch will the computer be able to access wifi through the USB adapter even when the switch is off?

Thanks for your help!

looking at a friend's laptop that won't charge battery.  % does not move past 18 or 19.  got a new battery, no difference.  machine used to run with just the ac power plug only.

bought a new I/O board and have the following situations and outcimes:

1. battery in only, no power lights at all and won't run.

2. battery in, ac power on.  all i get is 3 amber and 1 blinking white light. will not power on.

3. battery out, AC power in.  no system power light.  pushing power button on/off gives repeating white power light every 5 seconds.  laptop will not power on.

4. removed battery and ac power, held power button to dissipate electrical charge, no difference with ac wall plug (same result as #3).

5 AC wall plug has always tested at 119v AC In, 19.51v DC out.

Ideas?  none of the suggestions I read in the forums have worked.

DISKPART not showing source media on LIST DISK or LIST VOLUME?

I have an EXTERNAL USB Drive 1gb that I use to IMAGE machines all the time.  An employee got a new laptop Dell E5470 with an M.2 Sata SSD, and when I boot this machine to the external drive to apply a new image, diskpart does not show the External HDD under List Volume or List Disk.  I have played around in the BIOS thinking because of the new M.2 Sata SSD there was a setting that was causing this but I am unable to find anything that allows this to work.  It will boot from the External Drive but when running diskpart, it will not sow the drive so I can't apply and image or take an image since I have no were to place the image or copy it from.

Inspiron n5110 Touchpad not in Device Manager and not working at all

Hi, I recently knocked my laptop off of a chair and it knocked a lot of things out of place. Now when I turn it on, the touchpad is no longer recognised, as if it has completely broken. I opened up the laptop and checked the connector, which I put back in its place. But even now when I boot up it does not work. F3 generates no orange light, no mouse option appears in the device manager. What else can I try?

Kind regards

Hi, Dell

i've had this laptop for about 2 months now and the blue tooth suddenly stopped working. I've got a MX anywhere 2 mouse in my possession and for the life of my i could not get it to connect to my laptop. After my assessing, i've realized it must be my machine and not the mouse, since i can see its paired and powered on, while the laptop says the mouse is powered off.

How should i fix this problem.

Thank You.

P.S furthermore, this is not the first time the bluetooth doesn't work. Occasionally, my machine desync my blue tooth devices and i had to restart it multiple times to get it to work.

Dell XPS 15 9560 WiFi Problem

I just purchased a Dell XPS 15 9560 less than a week ago and the WiFi is causing some issues.

The speeds are good when I am right next to the router but if I move into the next room over (less than 3 meters away) the speed slows down dramatically (to about 0.5-3 mb/s).

There are 2 older laptops in the house and both of them have good speeds from anywhere in the house. One of them is also a Dell although not an XPS model.

I have updated the drivers and BIOS and I have spoken with tech support on the phone but they were not able to resolve the issue either.

Could this be a faulty wireless card or antennas?

Dell E7470 - is it possible to get the new Intel 6050 CPU with Intel Iris graphics ?

Hi,

I have Dell E7470 and I'm considering a motherboard replacement. The board has i7 CPU with Dell Part # VNKRJ . I wanted to ask If the new board with i7 CPU 6050 and Intel Iris graphics 540 (Dell part # YDW8F) will fit on my laptop ?

In addition, If I purchased an i5 board (Dell part # 3GMP2) , will I be able to replace the CPU with the one that I currently have on the old motherboard and get an i7 board ? I'm asking because the i5 board is cheaper than the i7 board.

Thank you

Memory upgrade Inspiron 15-5555

Used Crucial computer upgrade scanner and identified 8GB memory chips (2) to upgrade my 4GB system. The 8GB chips ar DDR3L-1866 Sodimm 1.35V CL13 kit.

I installed the memory chips and now all i get are stop codes, followed by "we will restart" ie. "Driver IRQL not less or equal"; Page fault in non area - RDYBOOST.sys"; Attempted write to read only memory - TCPIP.sys"; then get black Dell screen "Preparing Automatic Repair"; "Syatem thread exception not handled -USBHUB.sys; "Driver IRQL not less or equal - TCPIP.sys; "Driver IRQL not less or equal - Netio.sys": "Page fault in non page area"; "Kmode exception not handled" and more. Have only been able to get to Windows 10 start page twice when I was presented with an option screen to "Exit and open Windows 10; shut down; continue; open BIOS". Went to BIOS once and saw that speed was 1800, all other peramaters seemed to be OK.  When I replace the original 4GB memory I got the first opening screen saying that if I had not replaced memory that I should reseat memory. The computer went through a few reboots and then the Windows 10 screen came up.

Any idea why my computer will not accept this memory? Do I need to overclock the AMD E2 processor? If so how? Do I need to return 8GB memory chips and get a set with slower speed?

UGH!!!

E6430 bios cannot upgrade or downgrade

Recently got an e6430 with bios a A13. I wanted to downgrade to A12. Every time I do it, the process does the same thing. It has a progress bar saying it's preparing to update, but then just reboots and nothing changes. I've used DOS bootable USB, and Windows methods, neither is updating the bios.

I tried going to A03. Tried to going A18, A20, etc. But nothing ever works. The progress bar says it's preparing, then reboots.

Is there some setting I'm missing? I don't see some sort of "allow downgrade bios" option in the bios settings list.

Thanks.

Dell 7559 NIGHTMARE

I recently purchased this laptop and have had nothing but problems from day one. I am really hoping to find some resolution, as I want to love this thing, but the problems are starting to take a toll. The laptop was suffering from unending BSOD's from as soon as I downloaded steam and CS:GO. I thought maybe that was the problem so I got rid of them and the problem persisted. The BSOD's varied memory management issues to DPC Watchdog violations. I have tried the following steps and have been successful at stopping the BSOD (for now anyway):

Upgraded all drivers both on the Nvidia 960m and the on board graphics card.

Upgraded all Dell drivers and Windows is up to date. BIOS are up to date.

Performed a clean boot. No help.

Ran both a memory test and scannow and found no issues

Uninstalled Windows and re-installed

Even used DDU to delete the video card drivers and perform a clean install of them

The one commonality is that as soon as I fire up the diagnostics test, both thru Dell and 3rd party, my screen locks up, I get weird colored shapes throughout the screen and then it will crash with a BSOD or simply freeze all together. I am beyond frustrated and am looking for any and all help in resolving these issues. I am starting to think that the Nvidia card is the culprit .

When the diagnostic tools run they always freeze/crash on the video card test on the Nvidia chip. I no longer get BSOD, haven't in 3 days so far.

Inspiron 17R SE (7720) tale of woe...

Hi,

My 7720, which had been fine for years, suddenly decided that it did not want to boot.

This was sporadic for a few days and now it has given up.

The symptoms are:

When switched on the keyboard lights up, the dvd drive spins, then the special keys at the top right light up one by one then go out again, then nothing but the power/charging light (the fan does not even come on). It does not get as far as the Dell logo so I'm assuming a BIOS issue.

Originally I thought it was probably a heatsink issue (and with my machine being out of warranty), so I replaced the thermal pads and tried again... same result as before.

If I hold down 'd' when powering on, the display does the self test, so I know the display is ok.

If I hold down the end key and release it when I plug in the adapter lead, the fan blows at full speed so I know the fan is OK.

If I attach a usb key with the phlash16.exe, minidos.sys and bios.wph file; the computer accesses the key but nothing happens. Which is unsurprising since I have no way to extract the bios.wph file from the 7720A16.exe file as I only have access to a linux machine at the moment and it complains when I run it under wine that the current machine does not have a phoenix bios (even when trying to extract the rom file with '/WriteRomFile').

I believe the BIOS may be corrupt (I really hope the motherboard hasn't died as I can't seem to find a cheap replacement anywhere). I have already replaced the cmos battery, just in case that could have caused my woes...

Is there any kind soul out there that can extract the 7720A16.WPH file from the exe file for me, so that I can try a phoenix crisis bios recovery in the vain hope that my beloved workhorse will spring back into life like a modern day Lazarus?, or do I need to bin this lovely machine with its i7 and nvidia gfx and buy something else to replace it?

Hi!

I have a Dell Latitude E5470, I would like upgrade to the maximum possible RAM. I have found different references that indicate a maximum of 16 GB RAM (2x8) but also a maximum of 32 GB RAM. Is it possible to install 16 GB DDR4 SO DIMM (2133MHz)? Is there a modules compatibility list?

Dell Studio Laptop (2010?) Won't Start Past the Dell Logo

0

I need some help with my old Dell Studio Laptop. I don't know the exact make, but I am pretty sure it is from 2010. Anyway, a few weeks ago, I put a disc into my laptop and shortly, the laptop started making strange noises. I managed to eject the disc, but now whenever I try to start up the laptop, I cannot. After the Dell logo pops up, it says there is a problem with starting my computer (this is a blue, Windows 10 screen, as I downloaded Windows 10). I have tried restarting, following that blue screen to "Troubleshoot," "Advanced Options," "System Restore," etc., but nothing is working. I have some photos on my laptop that I would like to recover before this situation gets any worse. Thank you!
