New XPS 9560 Headache. No solution.

XPS 9560 : 2 months of dell *** and no solution.

Two months ago I received my new XPS 15 9560. When I first booted up,
it hanged on me and gave me some BSOD's. I figured that it was a drivers,
so I did a clean install of windows and finally got it stable.
Next, I noticed that the power jack was a little loose. It seems to be put
together pretty flimsy, so I caled Dell NL, they send a technician over
the next day. He told me it was Ok, so I left it.

A few days later, after taking the laptop from my work place to my home
(where it is a little more quiet), I noticed some annoying buzzing sounds /
static noises coming from the laptop. This would happen when scrolling
the screen and pressing a mouse button. But that's not all. This buzzing /
static turns was starting to turn into a high pitch whining noise as well.
I had not had the time to work much on the laptop while I was at work, so
that's why I probably didn't notice the buzzing earlier.

The buzzing / static noise is always there and the high pitch whine comes up
regurarly, regardless of CPU load or if the battery is plugged in. This is called
coil whine and it is a result of cheap components (capacitors vibrating) and /
or hardware design faults (I have a tech. degree, so I know what I talk about).

On day 16 / 17 ( I called Dell NL about this and they offered to replace the
motherboards. At the same time however, they also told me that they didn't know
if replacing motherboards would solve the problem, keep it more or less the same,
or make it even worse ....
Ofcourse, I then refused (wouldn't you?) and demanded either a refund or a new
non-refurbished replacement. Dell refused both, because it was a few days out
of the 14 day return window.

So : the machine has issues and Dell know's that repairs don't
solve the problem (just hit or miss) and at the same time won't take the machine
back or replace it? Are you kidding me ?

Then I figured that Dell NL won't help me, I'd try Dell Global (@dellcares).
After telling them my story, they seemed concerned that they would 'resolve' this
situation. I had hope and for a while I actually believed it. All they do is keep me on a
leash and 'buy time'. For more than a month now, I have been whining, shouting and
begging for a refund or replacement and I am still waiting for an 'update' as I write this.

But I'm done waiting.

To make a long story short :

I've paid 2000 euro's, for a headache. The laptop has issues and  Dell don't want to take
it back , they won't replace it and have no solutions for in regard of repairs.

I though I had rights as a consumer...

Dell Inspiron 15, 3000 series battery fail

Hi all,

My Dell Inspiron 15, 3000 series, tells me the battery has failed completely and needs to be replaced. The laptop is only 2 years old and my battery use has been low. A new battery appears to be about half the price of the machine and I'm loathe to pay that for only another 2 years of use.
Is this normal? Can I check that it is actually the battery that is failing and not something else?

Just for the record for anyone interested, the battery on my my Dell Chromebook 11 has become useless dead weight. Like others have reported, there is an apparent failure on the motherboard which makes the machine no longer connect to, recognize or charge the battery. Have seen no solution anywhere to this. The computer is just two years old. <legalistic removed>

Dell Latitude E7470 & Samsung 960 Pro NVMe Bios HD password issue

$

We have 600+ Dell Latitude laptops, with 170 of them being E7470 laptops, which support NVMe drives.

On a few E7470's & we added a Samsung 1TB 960 Pro M.2 NVME drives to them for testing. It is set to RAID on & legacy bios bootup in bios (not set to UEFI). I was able to load Windows 10 & everything is working as normal.

However, in the Bios HDD password under security, & the option is not there so I can enable it.. The actual option in the bios --> Security --> "Internal HDD-1 Password" is missing. Since this & most SSD's have full disk encryption already enabled, putting this ATA password makes the drive encrypted compliant (the ata password gets stored in the non-volatile memory of the SSD & is encrypted).

We have tried every option in the bios (setting admin/system password), changing to UEFI, AHCI, etc..

I am running the latest version of the Dell bios. Running the latest firmware for the Samsung 960.

When we put in another (non-NVMe drive) back into the E7470, the HD password option is there again. Dell is saying it is an issue with the Samsung 960 & that Dell supports ATA passwords on NVMe drives.

Anyone else set HD passwordson this SSD; especially anyone with a Dell?

Any ideas?
Thx

Latitude E5470 with ScanDisk SSD freeze when using memory intensive application

Hi Dell support forum,

My Latitude freezes when I am using applications that require a lot of memory. The computer becomes unresponsive. Even after waiting for a long time it does not recover. The only option is to hard reset by holding the power button.

I have tried to update the power management (AHCI Link Power Management) of the ScanDisk SSD but this did not help. All drivers are also up to date.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Specification:

Intel Core i5-6300U CPU 2.4GHz

8GB RAM

64 bit operating system

Hard Disk: ScanDisk X400 M2 2280 25 SCSI

TB16 unstable when WiFi is on

TB16 to single Dell E2416H @ 1920x1080, 60Hz, DisplayPort cable

Dell Wireless 1830 802.11ac, Driver 1.566.0.0

The display flickers, switches on and off, and eventually stays off.  I read a suggestion to try enabling Airplane Mode, thus turning off WiFi.  I did so and my system seems to be stable.

How can I use WiFi *and* the TB16 at the same time?

Dell XPS 13 & Inspiron 13 Touchpad - cursor jumps to different location when clicking touchpad button

$

I have purchase multiple xps 13 and inspiron 13 laptops and observe the same issues.  I tend to use the touch pad with my right hand's index finger, and click the touchpad button with my left hand's index finger.  It's a quick way to get things done.  Many in my organization do this, too and have been running into problems.

However, quite frequently (but not all the time) when I click the button with my left hand the cursor jumps to another location on the screen.  Frequently this is the lower-left corner of the screen, but sometimes it is the upper right, too. This causes different windows to come into focus, or it activates the start menu.  Really , really annoying, and it happens on both laptop models.  Our previous Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and Acer laptops did not have this issue.

I think this has to do with the touch pad thinking that the user has two fingers on the touch pad and moves the cursor thinking the finger jumped around the pad.  Otherwise the gestures and movement of the touchpad is fine.

Is this a known issue to Dell?  It's really aggravating and other users in my organization are complaining as well.  I may need to return the lot (3 XPS 13, 5 Inspiron 13 machines ) and look at different hardware.

E6410 backlit keyboard question

Dear members

I have a Dell Latitude E6410 laptop with a non-backlit keyboard.

I have thought to install a backlit keyboard but it is quite expensive.

I did see one going cheap but it had a french keyboard layout ie AZERTY rather than QWERTY . A number of keys are in different places.

I understand one could change the keyboard layout in Windows to the QWERTY but  I would like to ask a different question please.

Would I be able to remove  keys from the non-backlit keyboard and put them onto the backlit keyboard.

Also: would I be able to "swap round" the keys on the backlit keyboard.

What I would essentially be trying to do is make the "french" backlit keyboard into an "english" backlit keyboard.

If anyone could advise on this please it would be much appreciated

Thanks Ian

Latitude XT display problem

First post on the Dell community forums, couldn't find any other information on the Internet regarding my problem. I recently fresh installed Windows 7 since Vista's no longer supported, and everything has been working fine except for the N-trig drivers. With every version of the DuoSense driver I try, I always get an error saying "Fatal error - N-trig hardware was not detected on your system". I've tried every solution on the internet as well as the rollback tool, which says "Driver installation failed". I also tried installing a 64-bit version of Windows 7, however I received the same results as the 32-bit version. It got to a point where I downgraded back to Vista to see if the display worked under that, and it doesn't. Nothing related to N-trig coiuld be found in the device manager either. Could this be a physical problem with my machine? Any help would be massively appreciated.

8 Beep problem

Hello there,

I have an Alienware17 laptop which had been working fine until today.

As I was using it, I accidentally pressed Fn + F5 (which reads "I/D GFX")

This caused my laptop to reboot and when it restarted all the graphics were weird and terrible, after an it it just went full black screen for a long time so I pressed the power button to shut down the laptop.

Since then every time I power on the laptop the screen stays black and doesn't power up at ALL and all I hear is 8 beeps all the time... Any solutions ?

I didn't damage the laptop in any way, just pressed Fn + F5

Dell E6420 older BIOS A05 A08 need in order to install latest BIOS

Hello all,

Just bought this laptop from ebay and I am looking to upgrade my current BIOS (A03) to the latest one (A23). But I am not able to install this latest BIOS (A23) unless my current BIOS is (A05). I follow the instruction on Dell support site and trying to download (A05) but it does not show anything in the links.

Where can I find this (A05) BIOS for my laptop?

Here is the instruction provided by Dell Driver and Download:

Note:

1. Please note that if the A04 or before A04 BIOS is currently installed on your system, you must first update to A05 BIOS and then flash to the latest A-rev BIOS.
A05 link: www.dell.com/.../DriverDetails

2. Please note that if the A05 or after A05 BIOS and before A08 is currently installed on your system, you must first update to A08 BIOS and then flash to the latest A-rev BIOS.

Looking forward for your assistant and thanks in advance for all your help.

The Stunning Incompetence of Dell

$

Dell is really impressing me lately. I am really and truly impressed with the complete lack of competence from their support organization. Let me cover just a few of the areas I’ve encountered personally:

Software Updates

Several MONTHS ago, I reported to Dell that they have a faulty driver posted for the Dell XPS 15 9550 if you have a model with the Dell 1830 WiFi / Bluetooth adapter. The Bluetooth driver for this device fails to install crashing with an error. This driver supports a number of adapters and it may work for some of the other adapters, but it will crash every time for the 1830 adapter. I even pointed out to them where the fault lies (in the XML file) but this issue has still not been addressed even after 4 months. Note that I spoke to Dell support in person about this issue and when nothing happened after several months I even posted to the forums where Dell stated that they would address the issue and still nothing has changed.

On April 4, 2017, Dell posted an Intel Video driver for the system that causes repeated blue screen crashes and other problems but even with many users reporting this issue they have done NOTHING whatsoever about the issue. At the very least they could have pulled this faulty driver since the previous driver appears to work for everyone encountering these problems.

Today (April 25, 2017) Dell posted a new version of the Dell Update Application that crashes when you try to install it.

Note that of the above 3 examples, 2 of these drivers / apps WILL NOT EVEN INSTALL. What kind of quality control can you have if you are releasing drivers THAT CANNOT EVEN BE INSTALLED?

This clearly indicates that absolutely zero testing was performed with this.

Repair Service

My laptop was returned to Dell multiple times for service. The service people clearly are either incapable of reading or simply don’t care. For example, after spending many hours on the phone with Dell Technical Support and then making the determination that my laptop required service, I thought that it might be a good idea to enclose a note to Dell service noting, among other things, that a clean install of Windows was performed MANY TIMES in the process of troubleshooting the issues and this did not resolve the issues. So what does the service center do? They reinstall the OS from scratch and return the laptop to me.

Known faulty Hardware and Broken Promises

I have the Dell TB15 Thunderbolt Dock for my laptop. Once again, I spent a significant amount of time with Dell Support on the phone troubleshooting the issue I was having. Dell had told me that they were going to replace the dock but then later, when the time came to actually ship my unit to them for replacement, suddenly they changed their mind because I didn’t buy the unit directly from Dell. It was only finally after this that they acknowledged that they have a known fault with the chipset in the device and that it would require a replacement but that they had no replacements available yet. I was advised to contact them again “in a few months” to see if they had replacements. I’m not looking forward to that call.

On another occasion, DELL CALLED ME regarding problems I was having with my laptop. They stated that they would send a technician to me to perform repairs. I noted that I would only be home in a few days and that we should make the arrangements at that time. When that time came and we spoke again, they then suddenly declined to send someone noting that I didn’t have on site support for the unit. Again, note that THEY CALLED ME AND MADE THIS OFFER, it was not something that I requested. So that’s twice that they offered me a particular remedy and then went back on their word.

Conclusion

I am a serious technology enthusiast. I tend to purchase a new laptop every few months. If I said that I have personally owned 30 laptops over the years I’m 100% certain that this is way too low an estimate. I’ve owned Sony, Lenovo, HP, Fujitsu, Microsoft, and other systems. No one has ever provided an ownership experience that was anywhere even remotely as poor as the overall experience I’ve had with Dell.

I would love for Dell to read this and take it to heart and make some improvements but considering that on every single interaction I have with them I’m left disappointed, I seriously doubt that this will happen. In fact, I rather expect that the reaction will be to remove this post documenting my experience and feedback.

Latitude E5470 - how to enable Bitlocker?

$

Guys,

We just received a batch of E5470's but we are unable to encrypt them with Bitlocker.  We will be installing Win7 64bit.  The BIOS is at 1.12.6.  We will PXE boot and image these from a MDT.

In the BIOS, we select:

Boot sequence - UEFI (uncheck onboard NIC ipv4 and 6)

Advanced boot options - Select "enable legacy option ROMS" and "enable attempt legacy boot"

Integrated NIC - Check "enable UEFI network stack" and "enabled with PXE"

SATA Operation - AHCI

Security TPM 2.0 - "TPM On"  "SHA-256"  "Attestation Enable" "Key Storage Enable" and of course "Enabled"

Secure boot enable - "disabled"

MBAM gets loaded during the image.  When we login and attempt to enable bitlocker, it fails to encrypt every single time.

At the first login after the image, the TPM does show in device manager as "Broadcom USH" with an exclamation point.  After running Windows Updates and rebooting, it'll show as "Trusted Platform Module 2.0".

Does TPM need to be at 1.2 instead of 2.0?

Could someone please post the exact steps in order to get this enabled?
