Which laptop configuration should I choose?

$

Hello everyone. I'm looking for some opinions on which laptop configuration I should use. I'm going to purchase an entry level Sager gaming laptop. It comes down to the Sager NP5855 or the Sager NP6852. Should I opt for the 6852 with a 1080p IPS display, fingerprint sensor, multicolor keyboard, gtx 1050ti, 8gb ram, 1tb hard drive 7200rpm. Or the 5855 with 1080p non IPS display, no fingerprint sensor, white illuminated keyboard, gtx 1050 not ti, 16gb ram, and Samsung Evo 250 SD. They would be the exact same price which is what I can afford. My main thing is the IPS display and 1050ti with the 6852 or the 16gb of ram and ssd with the 5855. Sorry for the long post, appreciate any comments.please help.
Thanks.

I didn't find the right solution from the internet.

Keys not working on built in keyboard on my Inspiron 11

Update:  It has now been over a year since I sent mine back to Dell for repair. I have had NO issues whatsoever.  They charged me approx. $159 which included shipping.

This also fixed the charger port issue!  It must be related to the keys not working issue.  DO NOT let them sell you a new charger!

When the laptop is returned to you, they will call you to follow up to see if the issue has been fixed.  When they do, be sure to tell them how disappointed you are with Dell and they will refund $20 or $30 (cant remember which).

They didn't keep it long at all;  I think they are very familiar with this problem and know exactly how to fix it!  I hope this helps those who are still experiencing this problem.

Bitlocker Issue and TPM missing

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had encountered Bitlocker and TPM issues recently (possibly after a recent update)?

Just a few days ago every time I wake up my XPS 9360 it would ask me to input my recovery keys.

As this is getting annoying, I disabled Bitlocker altogether but somehow I can no longer enable it, it's saying "This device cannot use a Trusted Platform Module".

I've also checked Device Manager, I can see the TPM under Security Devices with the following message: "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)"

It appears the TPM feature just disappeared.

It's kind of similar to the discussion on the link below, but they're talking about 9550

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19985939

I've already tried flashing the BIOS with the same version 1.3.2 but still no TPM.

Dell Support is not very helpful either, still waiting for their reply.

Thanks,

How to turn off Touchpad click

Regardless of my touchpad settings, when I press (not tap) the main area of the touchpad, it acts like a left mouse click. I want to turn off the touchpad click in the large area of the touchpad but still have the two buttons in the lower area of the touchpad active.

This is not the "tap to click" feature - I have already turned that off.

How do I turn off the click in the main touchpad area?

Thanks.

Yesterday I plugged my cell phone into the computer and enabled it to use as usb. Immediately after that I noticed my usb mouse wasn't working and then realized the usb keyboard wasn't working. I tried a different mouse.....and still none of the ports on the computer would work. (They do however work on my laptop) Then I took the following steps.

1. unplugged my usb mouse (and everything else) and tried all the different ports.
2. tried both a different usb mouse as well as wireless mouse (which needed a usb to connect. Nothing was recognized
3. unplugged everything, shut the computer down. Unplugged the computer. Left it like that overnight.
4. When got up turned on the computer then tried to plug in....nothing recognized

XG4 SSD Performance

Does anyone know if Dell is working on a fix for the XG4 SSD performance? I'm getting about 48 MB/s sequential write in my brand new XPS 15 9560 and that is, well, pretty bad for a modern SSD.  Based on some web searching, it seems there is a possible workaround involving ACHI mode and some OCZ drivers. If I have to go that route I will, but would prefer to keep things "officially supported" while I'm still under warranty.

Thanks,

I purchased a XPS 15 (9550) from eBay. The system has the i7 CPU, UHD touch, 8gb RAM and 250gb SSD. There is no NVidia showing up in system manager. As far as I know the 2016 model shipped with the NVidia GPU so a bit worried that this isn't working. Any ideas.

The curse of the overheated graphic chips

$

The curse of the overheated graphic chips (or GPU Graphic Processing Unit) is similar to the plague of badcaps: a badly conceived and processed device found its way into a poorly designed system !

For the GPU curse, it is a perfect storm of

[1] a badly designed GPU (e.g. NVIDIA) chip with silicon hot spots, combined with the wrong bumping solder balls and defective packaging underfill. If the GPU chip overheats, the balls will crack and disconnect the GPU from the motherboard. Because in most laptop the GPU BIOS interrupt the boot BIOS during boot, the laptop will then not boot even though the laptop lights, CD and fan are working. In some cases, the laptop will nevertheless boot, but the display will be split, full of squares, or some component powered through the GPU e.g. WLAN will not work.

[2] very poorly thermal design of the laptop, causing GPU overheating and therefore ball cracking. For example, most of the laptop I gathered have a single heat-pipe from the GPU to the chipset to the CPU to the fan, instead of a dedicated heat-pipe for the GPU to the fan distinct from the heat-pipehooked to the CPU. Shame on you Dell & HP !

I just reviewed the stack of failed laptops; I hope that this list will help people that try to wonder why their laptops are not booting while all the lights/CD/fan are ON. The list is not exhaustive, but represents documented cases pf the overheated GPU curse.. All these failed laptops were quite expensive when first bought, and a significant loss for the small business. Some laptop families e.g. Dell XPS, Dell Latitude D630, HP DV2500/DV6000/V6000  have a 100% failure rate due to overheated Nvidia GPU.

When I have time, I will attempt to reflow all these GPUs, even though I know that the fix will only be temporary!

Chromebook 11 battery failure

I have a Chromebook 11 just two years old. The battery has stopped working. It won't charge. Have done powerwash restoration; have unseated the battery and then reconnected. Everything else recommended. With the Crosh utility, a battery test comes up with "no battery found". The computer works plugged in. Battery light is constantly flashing yellow.

Wondering how many other people have had such a problem and if any have a fix. Or is it just, sigh, another Dell computer that doesn't survive past 2 years?

New XPS 12 battery failure

Hi,

I just replaced my very SWOLLEN battery for the XPS 12 9Q33 with another original battery.

However, upon booting up the laptop with the new battery (which charges normally and up to 100%), I receive the error that says "battery has experienced permanent failure and needs to be replaced". I enter the BIOS through F2 and cannot find any awry settings.

My BIOS is updated and I have tried the trick of shutting it down, disconnecting the new battery and depressing the power switch for 30 seconds but to no avail.

The laptop boots up normally on power cable (with battery disconnected), and also boots up with battery connected albeit with the power button flashing orange and the error message that I am able to bypass by pressing F1.

Could this be a software issue since I am able to visualize details of the battery once I enter the OS?

Any assistance on this matter is greatly appreciated.
