Hey, sorry for this post if it is in the wrong forum. I only had this chose along with "audio" and/or "video".

My start-up has become really slow! I have a program called "procexp" that shows all the processes but I have NO idea what most of them are. How can I tell and throw away the things I do not need to help the start up?

Keyboard problem on my Inspiron 1525

The keyboard on my old Inspiron suddenly stopped typing a handful of letters and punctuation.  I just replaced it with a new keyboard that came in the mail and sadly it also isn't typing all the keys.  The keys not working (nothing happens when I press them) are at the right side, in a vertical row including the period, l, o, and 9.  For now all other keys seem to work.

I am not very saavy at repairing anything and was proud I replaced the keyboard only to see it also fail.

Is there anything else I can do to fix this?  I'd like to get a little more time out of this laptop.

Thanks for any tips!

Will Dell Studio 1737 battery fit Dell Studio 1747?

Just a quick question -- I bought a Dell Studio 1747 to replace my Studio 1737.    Would the 1737 battery fit/work on the 1747 without causing any problems?  They look the same, but didn't know if there was some internal power configuration going on that would mess up the 1747 --

Thanks

dell studio 15 screen distortion and graphics issue

I have a display issue with my studio 1537. I purchased my laptop in Feb and upgraded from vista to 7 using a retail version of windows 7 home premium upgrade.

Since upgrading the screen will distort and blur when i try to do simple things like switch between open windows or use aero snap.

I contacted dell email support and and they replaced my motherboard. This didn't fix anything. They would no longer respond to my emails so i called dell technical support. They made me do a clean install over the phone which didn't fix anything either. Dell then sent a technician to my home. He replaced my motherboard and returned the next day to replaced my motherboard another time, and also the LCD screen and screen cable.

I have now posted my laptop off to dell's repair center in the hope it will come back fixed. Below is a screen shot of the distortion. it generally occurs most around the tops of windows at first, and then spreads to fill the entire window or the desktop.

Has anyone heard of this issue before? I am getting frustrated at dell because they constantly insist on replacing the motherboard. I think this is because i have Intel integrated graphics. I heard on other forums that it can be fixed by replacing the 1gb ram for a 2gb chip to make a total of 4gb. (i currently have 3)
could someone please help me i would really like to have a working laptop for the holidays.

XPS L502X sudden freezing and shutdown/restart

Ok, so i have a XPS L502x that is having issues when I'm using my dedicated graphics card (Nvidia Geforce GT 540m) to run games such as Skyrim, League of legends, Spore, and Fallout. While playing these games using my GPU my computer will either freeze and making a buzzing sound through the speakers that requires a hard shutdown or black out and restart. Most things (and some games) I can get away with using just my integrated card and have no issues, but i got this computer for the gpu and really want to play more demanding games (ie: skyrim) that my integrated card cant handle. This issue only shows up while playing games. I have already tried cleaning with air, running dell diagnostics tests, and updating all the BIOS/drivers.  Anyone know any fixes i can try? Or should I look into replacing a piece of hardware since I don't want to buy a new computer? My computer is not under warranty anymore.

could it be overheating? If so what can I do to prevent that? I have tried lowering the graphics settings on games to help with that, but the solution is always only temporary.

Inspiron 7520 (15R SE) Windows 8.1 update- AMD Catalyst Control Center driver malfunction

$

Hey all, first time poster here, joined the forum to post this.

I have seen many difficulties people have had with the Inspiron 7520's switchable graphics card and driver malfunctions behind those problems. Many of these problems have gone unresolved on forums, and people overall have been very frustrated that Dell would sell a computer that does not allow the user to utilize the built in 2GB AMD 7730M dedicated graphics card.

I have fortunately not been plagued with these problems...until now. I did an update from Windows 8 (native OS my computer came with) to Windows 8.1, and immediately have experienced problems, namely that the Windows 8 drivers for AMD and Intel graphics are not supported by DirectX 11.2. I did not think this was a problem initially, as Windows update fixed the Intel drivers, but have experienced continued problems with the Catalyst Control Center. This is the third day since I installed Windows 8.1 and I have yet to find a solution.

Problem: After updating all drivers to Inspiron 7520 Windows 8.1 drivers from this website http://ftp.dell.com/published/Pages/inspiron-15r-se-7520.html#TopSolutions, which contains all the supposedly right drivers for my computer running 8.1, I continue to have trouble. CCC opens as it should, the interface is flawless etc etc except for setting programs to  "High Performance" does NOT allow the program to utilize the AMD card. There is no difference in performance between "Power Saving" and "High Performance" settings when changed in the CCC. Games run at terribly low FPS, as does any other graphic intensive program.

What I've Tried: Other than refreshing my PC to Windows 8 (and losing half my apps in the process), I have tried nearly everything.

- Uninstalling all display drivers and allowing them to update through Device Manager. (no difference)

- Uninstalling all drivers and reinstalling them from the Drivers and Utilities CD that came with my PC.  (Direct 3D cannot initialize due to older CCC not being supported by DirectX 11.2)

- Uninstalling all drivers and installing new drivers from the linked site above. (everything APPEARS to work, but CCC settings still do not allow programs to utilize dedicated graphics).

- Uninstalling drivers and reinstalling from http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15r-se-7520?driverId=HWM8D&osCode=W764&fileId=3176127380&languageCode=en&categoryId=VI&dgc=SM&cid=269844&lid=4962757 for INTEL

and http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/ukdhs1/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15r-se-7520?driverId=RH19N&osCode=W864&fileId=3080387755 for AMD card.

(Intel drivers informed me I did not meet the system requirements for install, AMD drivers could not initialize Direct3D= Windows 8.1 compatibility problem).

So now, the only options left to me are to refresh my PC back to Windows 8.0 where everything was working perfectly, thereby losing half my programs OR Dell will come out with a custom driver for the Inspiron 7520 that works with Windows 8.1.

IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME DIFFICULTY AS I AM PLEASE POST/REPLY/DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO GET THIS TOPIC ESCALATED. UNTIL THEN, A SIMPLE DRIVER MALFUNCTION IS SEVERELY LIMITING HARDWARE THAT WE PAID GOOD MONEY FOR AND CANNOT USE.

XPS 15 (L521x) Multi-finger scroll jumps

I love the hardware design of the XPS 15, except that the touchpad is unusable for scrolling.  My old Latitude 6520 at least could use the scroll zones well, but with the buttons on the L521x being part of the touchpad, the horizontal scroll zone impacts button usage and isn't worth it.

The big issue is the multi-finger scrolling jumps significantly when lifting fingers.  I've tried every version of the driver I could find, and they all have this issue.  If you make sure you completely stop scrolling before lifting fingers, then lift one at a time, I can usually avoid the jump, but that take more time than just using the keys to scroll.

Is there a way to either disable horizontal scrolling using scroll zones or fix the 2 finger scrolling to not jump?  Except for that issue (and some sporadic wifi issues that my be fixed with newest driver), this laptop would be perfect for me.

Ideas?

Why do I have 7 partitions on my Vostro 5470?

$

I had a quick look at Disk Management on my new Vostro 5470, and there are not less than 7 partitions displayed over there.

The laptop has a SSD of 128GB installed. I know that GPT hard drives require several partitions (to be specific, I know only about ESP, MSR and data partitions only) - but 7? My data partition has only 99GB available. That surely isn't a lot.

I know that some sort of Intel recovery is installed, and I know that the Dell diagnostics is installed somewhere too. But can anybody say what exactly is going on over there?

Dell XPS 13 making High-Pitched Noise (again)

$

I recently got a replacement XPS 13 due to my first one having issues with high-pitched noise coming out from somewhere inside. Technicians and Customer Service couldn't point out the culprit so they replaced the laptop altogether. And now I am having the exact same issue on my replacement machine. I see from different forum posts that this issue was discovered as early as May/June 2012 and it is still out there. I assume this might be "standard", but people don't notice it due to the frequency.

For such a premium machine with a pricy tag on it (the model I got: i7, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD (1080p edition btw) was priced at NOK 10495 with standard options) you'd expect such issues to be non-existant, if not fixed by now.

I LOVE the XPS 13 in every aspect possible; the lightweight construction, premium feel and solid performance. But I'm often in very quiet areas with this machine, and the noise drives me insane. (I'm a student)

'F' keys not working on my Dell Inspiron 3537

As far as I can tell, everything between F1 to F12 are not working e.g. I can't change the brightness or volume using these keys. All the keys either side of them (Esc, mute etc) all seem to work.

The laptop is brand new, just had it delivered today. Checked the 'My Dell' drivers and downloads section and it's saying i'm all up to date with my drivers. Does anyone know is this a common problem or how it can be fixed?

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Hi I am experiencing a major problem with my insparon laptop. When I press the power button the battery and charging light flash once and the computer makes a clicking noise. I used it yesterday morning and it was working fine, i had no error messages when it was running and it shut down like normal. I tried to use it last night and it just wouldn't turn on.

I cannot get hold of anyone in the technical support team as the woman keeps telling me the office is shut despite the opening hours being 9 - 6 on a saturday.

Dell XPS 15 (L502X) laptop Windows 8.1 Quanta H.264 integrate webcam Problem

$

Hi,

I installed Windows 8.1 yesterday and after the installation I noticed that my camera wasn't working. The Skype and Camera apps don't recognize there's a camera. After seeing this I installed the Dell Webcam Centre, but it didn't recognize it as well. I tried uninstalling the drivers and installing them again. The drivers for the Quanta webcam apparently don't recognize Windows 8.1 (I got an error message saying that you must have Windows XP SP2 or above to install them) so I installed them in compatibility mode for Windows 7. Unfortunately that didn't work as well. And now in the Device Manager the integrated camera is missing when it was working before the installation. Any ideas on how to resolve the issue? Is it possible that it's a hardware issue, a loose cable in the camera docking station or it's some kind of incompatibility with Windows 8.1? Thanks for everything in advance.

Kind regards, Ivan L Petrov
