Inspiron 17R SE 7720 shutting down while gaming

my inspiron 17r se 7720 has started to shut down every time i play a game, I can't hear the fan spinning up anymore so i assume this is a safety feature to stop the gfx card being damaged. Is there a way to monitor the gpu fan rather than trying to lift the laptop while in use. Its still under warranty by the way.

thanks for any help

Intel Rapid Start Technology - Resume fail

This is a duplicate post to one I've posted in 'Disk Drives' as A) wasn't sure which was appropriate B) rather both than it be missed.

Hi All,

I bought a new Dell Vostro 3360, Core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, BIOS (A11) before Christmas.

Worked great and then failed to boot. 2 days on phone support, ultimately the old motherboard (BIOS A11) was replaced under warranty as it was not possible to boot from USB, would not Boot from SSD, no optical drive, BIOS could not be flashed etc.

However since the new motherboard (A12) Intel Rapid Start has exhibited the following behaviour:

  1. IRST timer set to 1 minute. Documents left open on screen.
  2. On lid close / sleep, the sys enters S3 state with power light pulsing.
  3. After waiting 1 min, the hard drive light comes on, apparently writing the active RAM session to the SSD 'hibernate' partition.
  4. All power lights go out, system would now appear to be in S4.
  5. Pressing the power button, the power lights light up briefly (around 1 sec) and then all lights go out and system does not boot.
  6. Pressing power button a second time the system, will 'cold' boot, ie not resume from sleep. Returning to the desktop any open docs are closed. And examining the Event Log shows:
  1. Critical - Error ID 41 - "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
  • The above appears to demonstrate that at step 4, when power to the RAM is cut, the session is lost, either it doesn't successfully get written to the partition or if it does, then it fails to be returned to RAM at step 5.
  • For the record, disabling Windows 'Fast startup' makes no differnce.
  • Disabling Windows Hibernate via elevated cmd powercfg -h off, makes no difference.

So in the current state as left by the Dell Engineer, the system if not manually shutdown and allowed to Sleep will lose your open/unsaved work.

1. I updated the BIOS to the latest version 'A13' with no improvement.
2. I have deleted and re-created the 8192MB volume with DISKPART as per - http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=545794&doclang=en&l=en&s=dhs

With the exception that for a Win8 EUFI boot using a GPT disk, the SET ID is required to be SET ID=D3BFE2DE-3DAF-11DF-BA40-E3A556D89593.

SET ID=84 OVERRIDE does not work on this kind of Disk.

I also then re-installed the latest Rapid Start setup from Dell - 2.1.0.1002, A00 (23/10/2012)

3. The above partition appear to be 'accepted' by IRST, as unless setting the ID as above, IRST disappears from the BIOS and errors when running the IRST setup program.

4. If I don't follow the above then, IRST is not visible in the BIOS and I receive a 'Rapid Start is not enabled' message on boot to desktop. In this scenario the sys stays in S3 indefinitely.

I have spent a further 2 days on the phone with Dell Support, and their ultimate solution is replace the motherboard again.

I would like to know if there any other avenues / options to re-instate the Intel Rapid Start Technology.

Kind regards
Graham

As this is a Single SSD, Intel Smart Response does not apply.

White screen - is my laptop dead?!

My laptop screen is just completely white and nothing fixes it, have restarted etc. It works absolutely fine when I plug the laptop into the TV so I don't think there's anything actually wrong with the computer, just the screen!

The laptop is about 18 months old and wasn't cheap but I don't particularly want to spend more than $200 fixing it. Any ideas?

Backlit keyboard doesn't work - Dell Inspiron 15r se 7520.

I bought this laptop few days ago, and I noticed that my keyboard doesn't light up, and it is written on the laptop's box that it should have "backlit en kb".
I have quickset app installed, and I'm using windows 8.1. In the windows mobility center I can adjust keyboard's backlit slider (off - dim - bright) but it doesn't do anything. Any idea what problem am I facing ? or how should I know if my keyboard is really a backlit capable, how can I check, like if there's additional cable for backlit or something like that ? Thanks in advance to everyone who might try to help.

Issue with Dell Studio 1558

Hi,

i own Dell Studio 1558 brought in Aug 2010. In Apr-May 2013, issue occurred with System being ON, fans working but no display being shown. Connected it with other display & still it was not functioning. Reported the issue to Dell, after 3-4 visits engineer found the issue & processor was replaced and issue was solved.

However the same problem have occurred again within 3-4 months. Dell customer care have informed Motherboard of my configuration is not available with them & hence nothing can done. Addition to Rs. 50k, Rs. 11k was spent in Apr 2013 for solving an issue & the same thing have resurfaced.

Dell is saying they're helpless & they have run out of solutions & i'm left with Non-usable Laptop of just 3 years old, after Spending almost Rs. 60k on the same. Such terrific customer support from Dell is pathetic as far as i'm concerned.

Requesting suggestions of what needs to be done?. Are Processor / Motherboards available outside (apart from Dell)?

Dell M4800 Touchpad keeps turning itself back on

$

Having a strange issue with the Touchpad on my Dell Precision M4800. When I disable it using the Dell software or using the Fn+F5 hotkey, it has a tendency to come back on after a random interval of time. I want it to stay turned off permanently, as I prefer to use the Pointstick exclusively.

When using the Fn hotkey, I get a notification onscreen as well as a popup in the system tray saying "Touchpad notification: Your touchpad has been disabled." If I manually disable it through the Dell Pointing Devices software, I get the same effect, but without the notification. In either case, this works great... for awhile.

But then the Touchpad inevitably turns back on. I often don't notice until suddenly my mouse cursor is behaving erratically, at which point I try to swipe my finger on the touchpad and sure enough, it's become enabled again.

However after some further experimenting it turns out the "random" aspect of this is not totally random and I can reproduce the issue quite reliably by furiously scanning my finger back and forth across the Touchpad for a few seconds. Inevitably, the touchpad will turn back on, and I will get the notification "Your touchpad has been enabled." No buttons or hotkeys are pressed, all I have to do is move my finger on the touchpad surface rapidly and within seconds of starting to do that, it will re-enable itself. Again, there is also a notification that it has been re-enabled when this happens, so the software is detecting my finger movements somehow, perhaps I am accidentally performing some "magic gesture" that compels it to re-enable the touchpad.

If I don't intentionally try to cause this, it still turns on eventually, but can take a long time, half an hour or more before it becomes enabled again. I assume it's the activity of my palms resting on it that will accidentally turn it on again in the same way as swiping my finger intentionally across the disabled touchpad. It makes no difference whether the Dell Pointing Device software is open or closed and this will happen when any application is open.

All I want is for the touchpad to be truly disabled permanently and not accidentally turn on in the middle of my work. But at the same time I'd prefer to leave the pointing stick enabled, so I can't simply remove the driver. So far I've been using an external mouse and disabling all internal pointing devices, which works ok, but like I said I am fond of the pointing stick, I'd prefer to be able to leave it on with JUST the touchpad disabled.

This problem comes whenever I start my laptop and it goes away gradually and then it comes again, especially after shutting down and start again. I have some pictures, but dont know how to post them here.

And I tried to connect with an external screen, and it's good on external screen but not on the laptop's screen.

Mini 910 Battery

I now know why people say don't buy a Dell. After spending HOURS trying to find answers to why my Dell Mini 9 will not charge nor recognize batteries (have tried 2 w/ no luck), I have concluded that there is a major design problem with this computer and that Dell is hiding their head in the sand, hoping these will soon cycle out of existence. They have left all the folks with this problem with no option but to trash the <ADMIN NOTE: Profanity removed as per TOU> . Dell has offered 0 solutions to deal with this COMMON issue. I will never buy a Dell again and will advise everyone I know to do the same.

Mouse Trackpad not working properly after upgrade to Windows 8.1 on XPS12

$

Since I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 I have been needing to re-tune many settings (e.g. chrome text being blurry).

One thing that seems completely gone is my ability to right-click from my trackpad. I have so far been using an extended touch on the screen to right click, but this is an annoying and incomplete work around.

I thought maybe I needed to change some mouse settings, but when I went to the mouse settings from the control panel the Cypress TrackPad tab is gone!

I then realized that all the other functionality such as gestures and multi-touch were gone!

Anyone else have this happen to them or have a solution?

USB Port Does Not Work

One of the USB ports on my laptop works for a mouse, but it won't work for a flash drive or for mobile internet device.  When I plug in those devices, nothing happens. The other USB port works fine.  I ran the Windows and Dell diagnostics and they did not identify any problems. I also deleted the drivers under Device Manager and restarted the computer. Still the same problem.

Inspiron M5030 - Screen intermittently Blacks-out

Inspiron M5030

The display has a intermittent problem where the display doesn't display.  Video on the the VGA port is fine.

Either the system boots up OK and the display is good for a while (echoed to external VGA monitor) eventually the laptop display goes black, no display, but the view on the external monitor is just fine.  Then it comes back for a long period.  That cycle can repeat with irregular times of events.

Other times there is no display at all on the laptop display, with the echoed display on the external VGA monitor is fine and then the display just "comes on" and displays for a couple of minutes but then goes black again for a long period.  That cycle can repeat with irregular times of events.

Either the "on" duty cycle is long with short display blackouts or the "off" duty cycle is long with short periods of the laptop screen displaying.

No pattern has been discerned.  The display was completely removed from the NB and the video/camera cable was removed from the display and removed from the motherboard.  As best as I could, I verified the flat ribbon cable, contacts and MB connector were "healthy" and the NB was completely reassembled.

Q:  Is replacing the "video/camera cable" and "display" units a suggested fix for this issue or are there other things that can be looked at and if so, is there a priority list ?

{ Right now I have no display on the laptop at all }

TIA

Wifi is not work properly while lid closed Inspiron 3521

Hello!

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 3521 and absolutely satisfied with it but I have a problem. I reinstalled the windows 7 a few days ago and the wifi is not work properly while the lid is closed.

I looked up some forums and tried a few suggestions:

Start-->Control Panel-->Hardware and Sound-->Device Managger-->Network adapters-->Dell Wireless 1703 802.11d/g/n (2.4GHz)-->Properties-->Power Management-->Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power (unchecked)

Power Options--> High Performance-->Change advanced power settings-->Wireless adapter settings-->Power Saving Mode-->both Maximum Performance

While the lid is closed the wifi conncetion is still alive but instead of 2 Mb/s it is 0.06 Mb/s (tested on speedtest.net) the ping is the same with opened and closed lid. I have reinstalled the driver but it is the same. Before I reinstalled the os there was no problem with wifi.

I have found a forum where they suggested somebody with the same problem to do this with the usb root hub:

Properties-->Power Management-->Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power (unchecked)

I have done this too but isn't helped.

Thank you for your aid!
