Dell 14z, Windows 8, wont shutdown or suspend but restart works

0
0

As per the title, I have 14z running Windows 8 originally (upgraded to 8.1 now to see if that fixed the issue).

It was working fine, but for the past month or so it will not shutdown or suspend. Upon trying to do either it goes through the shutdown process as normal, the screen goes blank, but the power switch stays lit, as does the little power LED on the front edge. Pressing the power button or any other key yields now response. The only way to recover the machine is to hold down the power button and force it to shutdown. After this it boots as normal. I Have tried the following:

1) Turned off Hybrid sleep under all power profiles.

2) Turned off WOL on all adapters, although after every reboot the N2230 wirelss card keeps turning the option back on.

3) Disabled the Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapter

4) Uninstalled the display driver, but it picks the same one back up after a reboot.

5) Boot the machine safe boot mode, but the issue still persists.

6) Tried to do a refresh, but it asks for the Windows DVD which wasn't supplied with the machine.

7) Run SFC scan and checked the CBS log and other event logs, but cant see anything relevant to this problem.

8) Run troubleshooter, nothing found.

9) Finally in frustration upgraded to 8.1, which didn't resolve the issue either.

All updates have been applied and I've read through the dozens of other posts about this issue (here, MS forum and other forums) and tried the various suggestions, but nothing has worked.

The machine has automatic updates setup, so I can only imagine one of those has caused the issue. Its my dads machine, so has very basic use, with very few third party Apps ever installed.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, as I'm thoroughly fed up of this machine and Windows 8 at this point. The OS really seems like a hodge podge put together with the efforts of a million disperate coders working in isolation from one another. And I really don't understand what Dell expects us to do without an OS CD or ability to burn one for critical recovery of existing installs.

Battery not recognized

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and I didn't have any battery issues until I installed windows 7.  After that was  installed, at start up I get the black screen that says that the battery can not be detected.  It works fine when it is plugged in but if the cord accidentally comes out, it instantly shuts off.  It is very frustrating! Any ideas?

PES 12 not detecting AMD Radeon HD 7730M on inspiron 15r special edition

Insprion 1720 not starting up

Recently my 1720 stopped booting up.  I've checked the power output of the ac adapter, and its putting out the correct voltage.  When I turn the computer on, the power light (ON) lights up, then the battery/charging flashes once (blue, not the green or orange I have seen in other posts) and it stops there.

Prior to this, I've had replace battery warnings for a long time, so I can imagine that the battery is dead.  But this happens with our without battery plugged in.

One other bit of info that might be useful: prior to not working at all, i was able to hold the power button down (not using function or any of the other methods I've seen as official methods) and it would boot into the Dell diagnostics.  This is why I am asking this question here, as most of the other Dell laptop stuff I've seen does not seem to apply to my unit.  After either running the Dell diagnostics or simply exiting out of them, the laptop would start normally.  However, now I am unable to get into the diagnotics, either by holding the power button down or by turning on in conjunction with the fN button.  If I hold it long enough, the flashing power (ON) led will be followed by a solidLED, and then caps lock, num lock and scroll lock will all flash solid for a second or two, then nothing.

The harddrive in this unit has been replaced, so it's relatively new.  Is this possibly the bios battery being dead?

Many, many thanks in advance for any assistance!

Dell Inspiron 1501 won't recognize battery. Updated BIOS to 2.6.3, but still kaput

I took in an orphaned Inspiron 1501 a few weeks ago. I had to put in a new HDD (a reformatted Mac Powerbook drive) and reinstall Windows XP (lacking Dell recovery disks, I used a self-purchased retail OEM copy of Windows XP).

It will not recognize the battery; I get a message that says "warning The battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery press any key to continue."

Note that in updating/installing, I used Dell's BIOS updater to flash it to 2.6.3., a commonly found solution to this problem.

This issue was not present prior to replacing the HDD.

Thanks~

Dell Inspiron 3537, few problems

Hi.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3537 few weeks old. Originaly was Win8, but I update it to Win8.1.

After I registered laptop, next step was to partition my C: partition on two parts, partition C (OS), and D (Data). After that I successfully installed all programs I need. And after few days problems started with few BSoD. There are few problems and I will explain all of them.

My Dell checkup "Blue screen troubleshooter" reporting every few days one or more BSoD with explanation:
"The unknown driver (C:Windows/system32/drivers/atikmdag.sys) appears to have caused a system crash. Complete the tasks below to help prevent unexpected shutdowns in the future."

On same My Dell checkup I try to run "PC Checkup", and everything appear OK, no problems reported. Custom scan on only ATI video card (ATI Radeon HD8850), and result is "Passed".
I also run build in DELL diagnostics (Boot menu) and there was no errors, and also Dell online diagnostics and everything was fine.

I try to install new driver from DELL website (AMD Radeon HD 8850M driver 13.151.0.0), but during installation, screen blinked few times and then went off. I thought that this is OK since video driver was installing. I left Laptop for one hour to "finish installation" but noting happened. I turned off laptop by pressing ON/OFF button for 5 sec, but after that laptop don't want to restart. Here I noticed other problem I will share with you in the moment. Fortunately, I installed Acronis True Image 2014 so I was able to restore a system. BTW, same driver version was already installed acording to "MSINFO32).

Now, my system is running, I can still see BSoD warning  in My Dell Checkup, but actually I don't actually see this BSoD. Strange.
If I right click on desktop and then click on "Graphics Property" or "Configure switchable graphics" I get this warning:

Second problem. During my laptop beforehand explained "BLACKOUT", I tried to use Windows Recovery. I tried "Refresh" and "Reinstall" and both times I got message:

"Could not find the recovery environment. Insert your Windows installation or recovery media, and restart your PC with the media".

If I try to use "Dell Backup and Recovery", I got message:

"Dell Backup and Recovery has not been able to detect the recovery Partition on this computer. It may be missing or corrupted. To recover your computer to the original factory state and restore the Recovery partition, please use your System Recovery Disc." etc...etc...

I don't have any of this discs coz OS was preinstaled. So, basically I can't use any facilities to recover my laptop because I don't have factory recovery media or recovery disc. Fortunately I'm using Acronis, but that's not a point. I want something to recover my system to original, factory state.

Actually, Windows Restore facilities are OK and I can restore to some point I created.

BTW, my hard drive is partitioned on 7 partitions. Originally there were 6 partitions with huge C: partition. I split this one on two.

And also, since this BSoD is likely caused by video driver, how can I safely update this driver. As explained before, after first try I had disaster. Can I try to install new driver for AMD Radeon HD 8850M from ATI site?

Sorry for so long question. If there are any additional questions I will be more than happy to answer them.

Hopefully I will get some answers, thank's in advance!!

I recently bought an inspiron 3521 and after few months its motherboard crashed. A service man of dell came and replaced the motherboard and reinstalled windows my pc. All the drivers were uninstalled and then one by one i downloaded all the drivers from Dell's driver site. I downloaded both the network drivers but when open the application hotspot  and try to connect to wifi it shows an error. "Error in Start of soft AP".

Also the bluetooth is also not working. please help me in resolving this problem.

Another bad hinge story

I have the same issue & I wanted to know if this was an issue for any other Dell owner. The hinge on mine is very difficult to adjust...no wonder it broke away from the mounting!

A possible solution. Why couldn't a light-weight metal frame be made to snap around the monitor, similar to the rigid cases used on smaller electronic devices such as cell phones and iPods, etc? I would gladly try something of the like! Anyone out there know of anything like this on the market?

I am a non-traditional student & this makes doing homework a pain...computer is not able to go to class with me.

I am running Windows 8 64-bit on a Dell Latitude E6430. In device manager under Other Devices it lists Broadcom USH w/swipe sensor and there are no drivers installed for it. I cannot find drivers or Dell ControlPoint for Windows 8 64-bit or any downloads under Security on the support website for Windows 8 64-bit. Does anybody know when something might be released or have a link to download what I am missing?

Hibernate doesn't restore the system state

Hi.

I got a Dell Precision M4800 recently. It came with Windows 8 Pro 64-bit installed, which I upgraded to Windows 8.1.

Today I found out that hibernate doesn't work. It does turn off the system, but when it starts again it doesn't restore the saved state. It starts clean, losing unsaved data (if any).

I can't tell if it behaved this way before the upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Thanks for any help.

Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 Disconnects

Have had problems with this card (Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230) since day 1. Have tried every driver out there and it still drops
connection. Have tried on many different routers and WiFi systems with same results.

I would like to replace it with another brand. I am considering a Qualcomm Killer Wireless-N 1202 or the Intel Network 7260.HMWG WiFi
Wireless-AC 7260 H/T Dual Band 2x2 AC+Bluetooth HMC.

Does Dell block other manufacturer’s WiFi cards or non-Dell supported cards.? If so can you recommend another Dell supported card?

Thanks,
Dennis

Hi, I recently bought the Vostro 5470 laptop, with an SSD and Geforce 740m. I'd like to know what is the status of driver support for Windows 8.1? Is it safe to upgrade or not yet? Thanks

How to use euro and rupee keys on Dell Vostro 3460 keyboard?

0
0

The keyboard on the vostro 3460 has a standard US layout but the 4 $ key also has a rupee symbol and the 5 % key also has a euro symbol. How to I get the keyboard to generate the rupee or euro symbols? I tried every combination of ctrl and alt but I cannot generate the symbols. When the computer was new, the keyboard was set to us international, but it wasn't working properly. For both the ` ~ and ' " keys, the keys had to be pressed twice to generate a symbol and it would generate two. The rupee and euro keys were not working either. By changing the keyboard to us, I fixed the ` ~ and ' " keys, but the rupee and euro symbols are still not working. There are other posts asking the same question, but no answers. I'm presuming the keyboard should be set to some other layout, but the layout previews only show the unshifted keys. Anyone know how to fix this?

While on battery,  it will bluescreen after awhile, with the following error.

Perhaps somene can tell me  what is going on?

I evidently don't have way to read:

C:\Windows\Minidump\112913-19078-01.dmp

And Windows informs me that

C:\Users\deanh\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-39249-0.sysdata.xml

Dell Inspiron 1750 Won't power on

Dell Inspiron 1750 won't power up.  The power light on the front is white and the fan starts for about one second and stops.  Also there is a continuous beep when the external power adapter is not plugged in and I try to power on. The DVD won't start a bootable Windows 7 repair disk but, the dvd does start to turn momentarily, 2 seconds plus or minus, then stops. No beep tones present. Is this worth the effort to fix?

XPS will not boot

Hello, I have a laptop xps 1647, when I connect the power cable the power button automatically turns on but the laptop does not boot (with the laptop opened). This happens with or without the battery, and I have tried pressing the power button for 60 secs, with the fn and d key but no success. If the laptop is closed the amber lights appear steady and if I press the fn or d key the laptop goes again with the power button on but not possible to boot. Let me know if you have seen this behavior before.

Cheers,
