But have had no success, after every shut down and power back on the computer is back to having the number lock off. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

xps 13 9360 Samsung 960 EVO thermals and "features"

I just got my 9360 yesterday, today my 960 EVO showed up. I did the normal Reflect to mirror the image from my stock sandisk drive over to the 960 EVO. I had no issues with booting or doing the os install.

However I have experienced some hiccups, and was wondering if other 960 owners could drop in.

First thermals, I understand this drive would run "warm" however I did not anticipate my systems almost constantly needing to run the fan. Is this normal for other owners? it seems like after initial boot load the fans will turn off when the temps reach 45-46C but then they will creep up to 70-80C and the fans will kick in to pull the hot air out.

Second drive performance, reads and writes are subpar to what I had expected they would be mostly the writes. I installed the RIST drivers that I could find on the driver page, and I could not get Samsung magician to recognized the drive (I saw other people mention this). no changes, the drive is recognized as NVMe, but the performance does not reflect it.

So I guess does anyone know what I can do to actually optimize this drive? am I missing something? If I can't figure it out by Sunday I plan on returning the 960 EVO and swapping for a standard sata 6 drive.

Side note question: is there anyway of expanding my partition to include the whole drive if I use Reflect? I know I can just create another partition on the drive, but I would much rather have my c partition be the whole disk.

Thanks for any help.

Precision (M6400) boots only on battery not AC.

This formerly working laptop now boots only on battery. When attempting to use the AC adapter (with or without the battery installed), there is a roughly 8 second pause, then the num-lock LED blinks while the caps-lock and scroll-lock LEDs are solid lit. The service manual suggests this is a processor problem, so the first thing I did was replace the processor and ended up with the same results. Again, this boots normally when on battery only, but gives the above diagnostic when on AC. The POST diagnostic finds no problems. I have exchanged AC adapters and batteries with known-working items but with similar results.

Ideas?

BIOS update causing problems.

Judging from the posts over the last few days it appears many of us are experiencing problems after allowing the Dell installer to update our BIOS. Since I did so yesterday I cannot get my XPS 13 9350 to boot-up. I just get a statement on screen 'no bootable system detected'. How do I fix it?

New Dell PW7015MC Power Companion doesn't charge Dell XPS 13 9360

Hi,

I've purchased a new  Dell XPS 13 9360 in the last month. At the checkout was the recommendation to purchase a Dell PW7015MC Power Companion. I thought it would be good but it doesn't charge the Dell XPS13. It charges my phone no problems from the standard USB however the laptop doesn't show as charging at all. The light on the end of the USB C cable that goes into the laptop is on. The power companion is at full charge (5 little lights) but the laptop just ignores the companion (no indication that it is being charged at all).

Appreciate any advice before I contact Dell Support for a DOA/Warranty replacement.

Thanks in advance.

XPS 15 9550 screen resolution

Can't use most of my programs (e.g. VMware 12.5) due to very small menu's characters and images.

All recommendations or possible solutions so far didn't work.

The HiDPI screen looks beautiful but where is the fun if you can't use it ?

Will Dell ever come up with a solution?

Thanks

Battery does not have enough charge to power the dock?

Hi all,

There's a user who has a Latitude 7440 with Win 7 Pro. When she puts the laptop on the dock in the morning and turns it on, there's a message before Windows starts that says something like "The battery does not have enough charge to power the dock".

I checked the BIOS and it recognizes the 130w adaptor and you can see the charge level increase, it went from 20% to 23% while I was watching. I swapped out the dock and adaptor because I didn't know what else to do.

Can anyone explain what causes this or if there's a common fix? I told her to call me if it happens again and I'm not sure what the next step would be.

Thanks.

Looking for Media Driver on Windows 8 reinstallation

I have an Inspiron 3847 Desktop and cannot get past the bootup process.  Goes into the Startup Repair, but then can't fix it.

I'm trying to reinstall Win8 and it starts the Installation but at the "Collecting Information" part of the Windows setup, I get a message that wants some Media Driver.  Doesn't state which one.

I've browsed through all the drives and it's not finding it.

Any ideas what it's looking for?

Latitude E5540 does not recognize SSD/HDD/DVDRW

I have a Dell Latitude E5540 notebook, with more or less 1 year of sporadic use.

By simply plugging it in, it did not recognize the SSD. In the bios is not recognized. I bought a new HDD, thinking it would solve the problem. But it did not. I made all the settings in the possible bios, without success.

When searching google, it concludes that other people had the same problem, where they had to change the mobo to solve the problem. Therefore, I suppose this is a chronic problem of the design of this model.

Would anyone have any information on the subject?

Thank you

Dell N5110 Inspiron HDD clicking sound

I have an N5110 Inspiron. I bought it around 6 years ago. It had a faulty HDD so I had it replaced about 5.5 years ago. It has been working fine since then.

However, it has been making a weird clicking sound from the beginning. It usually occurs when the HDD is idle (the HDD led isn't on). Sometimes it doesn't happen for minutes whereas other times it happens a couple of seconds apart. I was wondering what could this be?

My laptop is getting quite old and currently, I cannot replace it so I want to keep it functional as long as possible. Could this clicking reduce the life-expectancy of my HDD, is it a sign of something faulty? If yes, what can I do to prevent an HDD failure and losing all my files?

N5030 Memory Upgrade Issues

Hi Everyone,

I've got a fairly old Inspiron N5030 I want to breathe some life back into, it's had barely a few days of use in it's life and could definitely serve as a great notebook for elderly folks.

I have attempted to pull out the 2x2GB DDR3 1.5V 1333Mhz SODIMMS and transplant in 2x4GB 1600Mhz DDR3L SODIMMS.

As I understand it after reading the datasheets of my new DIMMS, they should both operate at 1.5V and 1333Mhz without any issue, but once installed together or separately in both DIMM A and DIMM B slots, the machine won't POST and beeps 4 times indicating a memory error.

The DIMMS are Kingston KVR1LS11/4 and KTL-TP3CL/4G and neither will work at all, BIOS has been updated to A02 also.

Any help is appreciated, It's going to be hard to return the DIMMs as I'm sure its a compatibility thing vs faulty RAM.

Thanks!

Precision 5510 + NVMe + BSOD

Hi,

I have a Precision 5510 with Xeon CPU, 1Tbyte NVMe, Windows 10 Pro. I have the latest updates for Windows and (almost, see below) updates from Dell.

Sometimes (once a day or more) the disk activity goes 100% on Task manager - Performance, read and write speed to 0. After about 10s the computer crashes with a BSOD.

Sometimes instead (not sure if it is related) the computer hangs doing any disk related operation or it is really slow.

There are two Dell updates that seem to be successfully installed, but if I do another check with the Dell utility, those updates appear again.

The updates are:

Intel Serial IO driver driverid FC98F

Intel Management Engine Components Installer driverid X37VM

Feel free to ask for any log info might be useful.

Best regards,

Matteo

AC Power Adapter type cannot be determined

Dell Inspiron 5755 with a 17" display, running windows 10 and the latest BIOS version from Dell(as of 3/2/2017). AC adapter power supply is a 45W, 19.5V, 2.31A, Dell power supply. It works fine and is not damaged, (lite is lit on the brick and proper voltage out verified by using a VOM). When running on battery for a while and the battery low window pops up, I plug in the power supply and immediately get a message "The AC adapter power type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and battery will not charge". I ordered and tried another Dell 45W power supply. Same issue. I right clicked the battery icon in the system tray to display the Dell Power Manager. It says my battery is fine, 100% normal. As I unplug and plug in the power supply while the Dell Power Manager is up, I can see the word "charging" displayed in the management window for a bit, but then it disappears. The battery Icon itself shows that the power supply is plugged in as it displays a male electrical plug. If I remove the battery the laptop powers up fine. The BIOS in this machine does not display the charging device information, just that the battery is 100% normal. While in BIOS I hit the F9 key to reset basic bios functions to no avail. I also tried uninstalling the AC adapter and ACPI- compliant control method battery and re-booting to no avail. I can get the original power supply to charge a low battery by continuously unplugging and plugging back in the connector to the laptop. It takes a few tries, but at some point, it says its charging. I can't get the new Dell power supply to supposedly charge the laptop although, I've had it plugged into the laptop for 3.5 hours now and the battery says it's plugged in and the charge level at 100%. If I unplug the new charger, I'm sure it will not recognize the charger, but still tell me it's plugged in.

Any thoughts?

Windows 10 Pro x64 Operating System Recovery Image for Precision 5510

What should my expectations be after successfully using the Dell-provided "Download Operating System Recovery Image" for Windows 10 Pro x64 on a Precision 5510 laptop?

I successfully downloaded and wrote the "Windows 10 Pro - 64-Bit" image to a USB drive, and successfully used the "Recover from a drive" option as described.  But the resulting Windows 10 Pro x64 installation looked little different than if I had simply taken retail Microsoft Windows 10 Pro x64 1511 (November 2015) installation media and performed a clean installation.

Meaning it didn't appear to restore "a Dell-customized Windows installation", nor "specifically prepared for the Precision 5510."  Device Manager still had about a dozen drivers missing that Windows wouldn't pick up from locally installed drivers or Windows Update, etc.  I was expecting the "Download Operating System Recovery Image" to approximately match the shipping factory image for the Precision 5510.  At least for drivers and hardware, if not also installed support software.

Since it's still based on the November 2015 release of Windows 10, the image clearly isn't "the latest".  Note the .ISO the Dell Support site provided for me to download was "2DF4FA00_W10x64ROW_pro(DL)_v3.iso", which based on the dates inside the ISO, was prepared in March 2016.

Just wondering if this is a clue of me still not doing something correctly with the Operating System Recovery Image process, or that this is indeed the best outcome that can be expected using that media.  (In which case, I'll probably prefer to use the January 2017 Microsoft media instead.)  But I would think I'd prefer a Dell-configured image, intended specifically for the Precision 5510.

-Alan

Note I did encounter the issue of "Unable to reset your PC.  The system drive cannot be found."  Which based on other posts, had been attributed to the Dell Operating System Recovery Image not having automatically loaded the Intel storage drivers to support the internal M.2 drive.

But the "2DF4FA00_W10x64ROW_pro(DL)_v3.iso" appeared to already solve that problem, and already provided those drivers.  Forcing them to manually load didn't change the error.  In my case it seemed like, literally, the "recovery process" expected "there must already be a system drive" on the installed hard drives.

Indeed, I had DISKPARTed and CLEANed the M.2 and the 2.5 drive, expecting to start clean and restore back to a Dell-provided Windows 10 installation.  But the "Recover from a drive" process failed with "The system drive cannot be found", until I put a basic Windows 10 installation back onto the M.2 drive using retail Microsoft Windows 10 media.

As though the "Operating System Recovery Image" process is unable to deal with uninitialized & unpartitioned drives, which if true, seems unusual for "recovery."  Brand new hard drives aren't going to be initialized or have partitions, either.

New XPS 13 9365 2in1 - Down the Rabbit Hole

I am not looking for help but wanted to show the journey while setting up this new system.

I started the system up and went through the Win 10 Pro setup and used a Local account. I got to the Desktop and things looked normal.  But that did not last long as I started receiving messages about Windows Activation.  I checked and it showed the Activation Servers could not be reached and to try back later.

While I was trying to activate I was downloading some Windows updates... Possibly the Wireless was on a Public network but I did not check.  But the Desktop background turned black and icons were removed from the Task Bar.  If I put the cursor over the taskbar, I got the blue circle and could not even click the taskbar.

Since I have always seen Windows giving a new user some time to Activate, I did not expect the system to be partially disabled this quickly.  But by this time the updates had downloaded and were ready for a restart, which I allowed.

When back in the Desktop, The Desktop background and icons were normal, but I noticed there was no wireless icon on the taskbar.  I checked the adapter and it showed enabled and a strong signal...  So I did a Network Reset which rebooted the system.  The wireless icon was back but when I tried to access my NAS I got one of those "Network Discovery is not enabled", which is a Red Flag to me that my network has been designated as Public.  The way to make a Public network Private is to select the Homegroup and "Change Network Location" option on that page.  The network went back to private and Windows was immediately activated.

I had also noticed, earlier, that the OS partition was "Bitlocker Encrypted" which I never use.  Finding the Bitlocker Conrol panel, it was showing locked with no options to turn off and a note saying it was waiting for Acitvation.  Well, it was really waiting for Activation and signing on with a Microsoft account.  Once I changed to a Microsoft Account the option to turn off Bitlocker was available and it decrypted without needing a Bitlocker key.  I have never seen this, even on the 3 week old Inspiron 17 7000.  It would appear this is now part of a security situation on a new system.

I can certainly see how a normal user would experience problems with their new system.

Thanks for reading..
