Dual Boot Win7 and Ubuntu 14.04 Problem with installing m2 PCIe NVME on Precision 5510

Yikes! installing a second partition with Ubuntu is really hard next to Win7 on a m2 PCIe NVME.If you have been successful, your help would be greatly appreciated.

I have encountered numerous problems installing Ubuntu 14.04 on a separate partition on a Precision 5510 with  1TB m2 PCIe NVME memory installed by Dell.

I started out by creating a USB with the Universal USB Installer and the Ubuntu 14.04 installer.

then followed these stepswww.lifewire.com/ultimate-windows-8-1-ubuntu-dual-boot-guide-2200654 encountered two problems.

1.) When booted to try Ubuntu and then selecting the install ubuntu icon, the installer does not recognize the m2 PCIe NVME drive and failing because the installer sees < 6GB of storage.

2.) The system bios configuration SATA operations must be changed from RAID On to ACHI - This corrupts the Factory Win 7 image installed by Dell and fixing it requires reversing the bios configuration change and running windows repair.

This is dead simple with on any system with a SATA  hard drive.

Has anyone successfully done this?

Here is the really crazy thing. I need both Ubuntu for work and windows to communicate with the most of the world.

I chose to have Win7 factory installed believing that installing Ubuntu on a second partition of the m2 PCIe NVME drive would be simple. But that means Dell's support for Ubuntu and access to the Dell factory Ubuntu 14.04 image with drivers including m2 PCIe NVME is excluded from me which I think would solve the problem.

Thank you

Hinges Broken - Inspiron 500 series

My Dell Inspiron 5000 series is under warranty (extended) till Sept 2017. The accidental coverage was over by September 2016. I have been facing a cracking sound of the hinges for quite a long time. I have reported dell about the issue.

"The cover was tight and hard to open since the last service after my LCD screen was replaced for having white spots. Since I had to move to the United States for a year, it was not able to report the issue immediately. It has become too hard to open the cover and I presume it will break soon. If the hinges are broken, is it covered under warranty? I still have the extended warranty. It is important that I have to sue the laptop everyday"

and I received an answer:

"Sir, I would like to inform you that your system is not covered under Accidental Damage Warranty( Complete Cover). Your system is covered under the basic Hardware warranty which covers Hardware faults.
Kindly confirm whether the system is currently in U.S or in India.
However, as you have mentioned that the Lid(cover) has become too hard to open and can lead to breakage, there is an option to visit our Dell Authorized Service Center (if the system is in India) where the Technicians can check the system thoroughly and fix all the issues for you. Please find below the link for the details of all the Dell Authorized Service Centers in India :
http://www.dell.com/support/home/in/en/indhs1/servicecenter"

Now the right hinge is broken. Since am currently not in India for another few months, I couldn't approach any dell service agents.

From the previous posts I understand that it is a basic flaw in the design. I could see lot of similar messages from the dell community around the world in this link:

 en.community.dell.com/.../19622428

Kindly suggest if i get any warranty coverage for this.

I have been a good customer of dell for the past 10 years.

Black screen (no cursor) after Windows Logo, WIndows 10

Hello,

Hello,

I'm having some major issues with my mother's Dell laptop. It is an n5050 Inspiron. To make a long story short, it started messing up when I tried to reinstall Windows 10 home addition, 64-bit. After installation, all I get is a black screen with no cursor after I go past the Windows logo with the little balls spinning around.

The only way I can get it to actually work and get into windows is to close the laptop lid and put it to sleep. When I reopen the lid, it works fine and goes into the Windows operating system and does what it's supposed to do.

Here are some of the different interventions I have completed, but to no avail:
1. Re-installed Windows 10 twice (first a refresh, then a full install).
2. Upgraded the BIOS from A04 to A05.
3. Upgraded ALL drivers.
4. Ran various diagnostics tests, but nothing was wrong, according to the computer.
5. Uninstalled and re-installed various drivers.

Intel Pentium B960 (2.2 GHz)
4 GB Memory 320 GB HDD
Intel HD Graphics
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
8X CD/DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)

I don't know *** is wrong and I am getting to the point to where I am at my wit's end! If anyone can help give me more suggestions as to what I can do to remedy this problem, it is greatly appreciated. I am losing my mind!!!

Precision 7510 Hard disk problem

I have a 7510 with a 512GB nvme drive installed. I have been attempting to install a secondary hard disk. The first drive I tried to install was a HGST 1TB 7200 RPM drive. No matter what I have tried the drive will not show up in BIOS and is not recognized in Windows 10 Disk Management. I have another laptop (HP 8760W Elitebook) and this laptop sees the drive just fine. So I tried another drive exactly like the first and it will not see this drive either. So I decided to try a third drive that I have which is a Samsung 1TB 5400 RPM drive and this drive works just fine, no problems. I have tried removing and reinserting them several times but it will not see the HGST drives. Does anyone on the forum have any suggestions? Again, both of the drives that the Dell will not recognize work just fine on my other laptop.

Thanks

Battery not charging & at 0% - Inspiron 3531

My charger broke and I accidentally bought a new one that wasn't compatible resulting in the battery being "plugged in but not charging" (I think it was a Insignia Universal 90W). I used the Insignia charger for a bit before replacing it with a Targus 90W Universal.

Even with the new, Targus 90W Universal it's plugged in but not charging. Actually, what it now says is "0% 1 minute to full charge".

I ran a Diagnostic Scan using the Dell website and got back: "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery - Battery Life Test - Failed"

Went to see if there were any drivers that needed updating and that resulted in "BIOS| Dell Inspiron 3531 System BIOS" needing updating, but "manual installation required". When I tried manually installing a pop-up said, "The battery must be charged above 10% before the system BIOS can be flashed".

What should I try next? Thanks in advance!

Inspiron 15R 7520 upgrade wifi card to 5Ghz

I have a new router Wi-Fi 600 Mbps on 2.4 GHz + 1300 Mbps on 5 GHz and wondering whether it is worth upgrading my laptop wifi card Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2230

Any idea which internal card I could upgrade to?

I have looked at external USB cards but none of these seem to be significantly faster than the 300Mbps of the existing card. Or am I comparing apples with pears? And would an external card conflict with the current internal card wifi / bluetooth.

Does anyone have any experience of upgrading to 5Ghz on this laptop and whether it was worth the effort.

XPS13 Won't Recognize charger

Hi,

I bought a brand new XPS13 at Christmas and have charged it once. When I went to charge it again, the laptop didn't recognize that there was a charger plugged in and the light on the charger would not turn on and there was no battery charging. This is all of the brand new original hardware/parts that came with the laptop.

Thanks

Laptop to Router?

I just received my new XPS13, (9360).  Upgrade from my old but reliable XPS15, (L502X), which I mostly used as my desktop machine and as such it was hard wired into the router which sat a few feet away.
Looks like the XPS13 cannot be hard wired into the router, correct?  Or is there a connector/adapter for this?  Thank you.

Resolution Issues & BSODs Shortly After Re-Connecting Laptop to External Displays

Hello,

I am looking for help, as I have been having some resolution issues with my extended monitors for quite some time.  There are a large number of problems that range from BSODing shortly after re-connecting my docked monitors on a regular basis to having constant annoyances with sizes on screen.  I have tried and searched for hours and attempted every applicable resolution, but I haven't found a correct solution.  While I would love to resolve problems with resolution, the BSODs after re-docking are my primary problem.

Problems

  • Refer to this gallery for images citing the specific resolution issues (apologies for the compressed/poor quality):  http://imgur.com/a/JP1te
  • BSOD after re-connecting my laptop to either docks (takes about 15-20 minutes and gives multiple error messages)
  • Very inconsistent font sizes and sizes associated with Windows and file explorer
  • Applications, both DPI-aware and non-DPI aware, have scaling issues

Things I have tried/notice:

  • Updated drivers, BIOS, firmware, software, etc.
  • Ran the various Windows commands to check for errors (sfc /scannow, dism, etc.)
  • Swapped wires and re-seated connections
  • Adjusted refresh rate on external monitors to 59 and 60 hz
  • Adjusted resolution on primary monitor to 1920x1080 to match both external monitors (while this is an undesirable solution, it did help some problems and helped address many of the sizing problems, especially with file explorer)
  • Used custom scaling instead of standard resolutions
  • Installed Samsung drivers for monitors
  • Reset the monitors to default settings
  • As an aside, the resolution problems disappear entirely on the external monitors if I set them to mirror the primary monitor.  However, as soon as I extend the display, the resolution problems appear.  I do not want to mirror my monitors, but I don't understand why a mirror would correct the problems.
  • 9 times out of 10, the BSODs will occur after re-connecting my laptop to my external displays.  However, if I reboot my laptop immediately after reconnecting to the monitors, there will not be a BSOD.
  • The BSOD gives three or so different errors, ranging from "Critical Process Died", "Memory Management", Exception Not Handled, etc.

Hardware/Specs:

  • Dell XPS 15 9550 Laptop
  • Primary Monitor: 3840x2160 (also 1920x1080)
  • Two Secondary External Monitors: Samsung S27E510 (1920x1080)
  • OS: Windows 10 Version 1607 - I have had the same problems with multiple builds.  I also had the same problems on Version 1511.
  • Dock 1: USB-C hub to allow for a second HDMI external monitor, in addition to the other secondary HDMI external monitor, which is connected directly to the laptop
  • Dock 2: Thunderbolt TB-15 (this was installed a few months after using the USB-C hub, but did not change any of the issues)
  • Video Card/Drivers: Intel HD 530 (Dell Firmware - 20.19.15.4483) and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M (Driver - 21.21.13.757) - the NVIDIA driver was disabled, which helped improve some of the problems, but not all of them.

Ongoing problems with Dell Inspiron Laptop Model 15-5548

In early September 2016, I received my new Dell Laptop.  The computer has not worked properly for more than a couple of hous since I received it.  In an attempt to resolve the operating problems a Dell technician worked on it at least six times, by remote operation; rsetting the Windows 10 operating system.  Ialso reset the system four times on my own.  The computer would seem to be functioning properly for an hour or two, then the original problems would occurr again.  The Search function in the Start Menu does not operate.  The Edge program will not open; no programs appear in the Start Menu.  When I click on the email icon in the taskbar,  I only get a quick flash, and nothing else happens, so no email.  The Cortina function does not operate. When I attempt to open a picture from my file, I gat a error window message that reads "Invalid value for registry.  Has anyone else had this type of problem with a Dell computer?

DELL "SUPER" XPS 9550 LapTop

$

Hi Everyone who will read this post. I hope dell representatives will take some time to read it too, and ofcourse take immediate action to solve all the issues we can find in their "TOP" laptop. Ofcoure I DO understand that none of dell support staff will move a finger to resolve this. Still, I just want to tell something, tell my expression about this "TOP" Dell XPS 9550 laptop.

So. What do i start with... Having a very bad experience with HP Probook 4730s Laptop, that is Business laptop, I decided never to buy HP anymore. I was looking for a FAST laptop, thin and light. For now I can not find a Perfect laptop, but Dell XPS 9550 was more or less a good option charging from reviews I found on the internet. So I bought this ......

I paid 1630 USD for I7 6700HQ, 16 GB DDR4, 512 SSD PCIE, FULLHD SCreen.  for this money it supposed to be able to make coffee for me :). But NO. Instead I had a lot of issues.  I would understand it if I bought it just agter it was released and was a new buggy model, but i bought it in the end of 2016. That is, it had been manufactured and sold for almost a year, so I suppose all the issues should have been solved by the time I bought mine. Bu it was not true, because as far *** I understand, DELL does not give a *** about their "TOP" laptop at all!!!!

So why am I so disappointed with it??? Ok.

1. Just after I bought it, the very first hour i faced with a FREEZING issue. I turn on some music or play some video and somewhere like after 2 minutes my sound freezes for half a second. It does like this every time i reboot the laptop and start music or video again.

I tried updating windows and drivers but the issue remained.

2. While playing video or music, I tried to disconnect power supply and at the moment I disconnect the plug or connect it to the laptop I experience the same freezing sound issue for half a second everytime i connect/disconnect the PSU.

Hey Dell engeneers, what the .... is it????

3. The most advanced feature of the laptop is the possibility to BURN internal speakers. I think dell engeneers implemented this feature probably  just for fun :) or as it had been mentioned everywhere on the internet, it is a "MacBook Pro" killer,   but probably it is "Speaker Killer" laptop instead :).

So if you happy users of this 9550 XPS want to burn your speakers, just follow this instructions:

Install AIMP or any othey audio player that will allow you to go to options and change output device to ASIO. Then turn your player volume to maximum and your system volume to max and try to play any music file. 1, 2, 3 seconds and you are done. First your left speaker will start to rattle and in a few seconds the right one. And all you will hear after this is a RATTLE, not a sound. Good job Dell engeneers !!!!

So this is what happened to me first time. The speakers just died. I had warranty and sent it to factory for speaker replacement.

4. But then i faced with one more issue.  I had new speakers already, I updated new audio drivers, but.... sometimes when playing audio/video i heard randomly some sound dissortion, some clicks. and the Plugging in/out he power supply stil produced that noise. So I decided to install old drivers. I did. and I felt like my sound was a bit different. I turned the music for maximum and guess what??? Oh yeah, my left speaker died again !!!!!!   WOW. 1630 USD TOP DELL LAPTOP, built from a single block of alluminum!!!! WOW!!! Amazing.

So I just have one question, not about how to fix this problem, no. I know it is impossible. I just want to ask this engeneer who was responsible for releasing this laptop for the market,   WHERE DO YOUR HANDS COME FROM?????

I am not the only one who has these issues. Is it so hard to make changes to the mainboard and fix this problem, recall all the bad series of this laptop and make everyone happy and know that next time those people will stick with DELL????

Now I have to replace those speakers again, but after I do it, I am afraid to install any drivers, or play music, because they might burn again, and I paid 32 USD on eBay for them.

Disaster, total disaster not a laptop.

And I forgot to mention, that when you play NFS for example and keep any key pressed (acceleration key or any other) you hear those freezing sounds again. You can also try pressing screen brightness buttons and you will feel this issue again.

PLEASE if possible to fix this in bios, do fix it, otherwise make new mainboard and recall all the 9550 XPS laptops!!!!!!!

Inspiron 7378 Cracked Screen from Opening Lid

$

Looks like this is a common problem with Inspiron 7000 line.  At least on the 7378, the lid flexes too much while opening while holding a corner, leading to the glass to crack after owning it only 100 days.  The crack follows the flex seam exactly.  It's never been dropped or mishandled.  $239 to replace.  This should be an in warrantee fix, obvious design flaw.

XPS 15 9550 USB3 Ports

From the Reference Manual for the XPS 15 9550, it appears that the two USB3 ports have the same power capability. However when I tried using a USB3 driven camera connected through a regular cable and a USB3 extension cable, I had issues when I tried the left USB3 port. However it did work fine when using the right USB3 port. Are the two ports not equal in power?

I have the latest BIOS and drivers.
