Green light off

$

I am not sure which subject this comes under but here goes.  I got a Del inspiron 7720 that came loaded with windows 8.  I replaced the hard drive last year with a solid state and installed windows and then before the free upgrade to windows 10 stopped I put windows 10 on it.

The green led light was working for months to tell me to hit the FN+F3 key to turn off the touch pad.

Yesterday I noticed that no longer works.

Nothing I tried has got the green light back on so I can use this function .

  No errors in device manager.

I ran the hardware thing when booting by hitting the f12 key but it said no problems found.

Any idea on why this green led light went off ? and I am no longer able to turn the touch pad off and on.  I would like to just disable it as I never use it but I see no way in system BIOS to do that.  Any tip appreciated.  Tom

XPS 15 (9550)

Hi,

I have this model, this is the second time I have had a failure of this type on this laptop. What happens is the unit goes into hibernation, then on subsequent attempts to power it on the power light illuminates for about 10 seconds, nothing else happens, no splash screen, num/caps lock has no effect. It does it both on power and battery.

The motherboard has been replaced once, it's being replaced again tomorrow, is this a failure other people have seen? It's running Windows 10 with all bios and driver updates installed.

Thanks

I just turned on my laptop and as it finished booting up I got a BSOD with the message system_service_exception. I cant turn it on now but the first time I booted it up I managed to run a systems diagnostics. I got an error message saying,"Error Code: 2000-0114 Validation Code: 112740 cpu Cache integrity test discrepancy. CPU 0[ID 0x0] data error at address 0x966B00E0. Expected FFD4FF1F but found FF94FF1F". Also I think the hard drive might have some issues.

Whenever I try to install a game, in this case, GTA V, the download speed starts at ~10 Mb/s but then it slowly goes down until it hits 0 and then I have to wait a couple minutes and it goes back to ~5 Mb/s and repeats this, I've had this laptop for around 6 months now.
Help please.

Missing On Screen Display (OSD) for volume and brightness adjustments with Fn keys

I have a Dell Precision 5510 laptop issued by my work. They have installed some custom software and  and I seem to have lost the OSD showing the little bars indicating adjustments to Volume and Brightness when you use the Fn keys to adjust them. A search of previous threads indicated this function was previously managed by a program called Dell Quickset or Dell ControlPoint System Manager, but these were from posts several years old and neither of those programs seems to be applicable to my current laptop. Any idea what program or drivers need to be installed to restore this functionality?

Edit: I'm on Windows 7

No WiFi auto-connect on XPS 13 9360 / Windows 10 Insider 14986

My new XPS 13 9360 will not auto-connect to any WiFi access points.

I am fully up-to-date on BIOS and all drivers from Dell; currently I see this on Windows 10 Build 14986 (which is the latest slow ring insider build) - but I _may_ have seen this on the latest Windows 10 stable edition as well.

I have tried recreating access points, reinstalling drivers, all to no avail.

The access points in question auto-connect perfectly with another laptop. Generally, once (manually) connected, WiFi works very well.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions on how to make auto-connect work reliably.

I bought a Inspiron 7378.  The website says in can charge via the USB-C port. Other than docking stations what charger is needed?  Can I use any charger that meets certain specs/amps?  Dell is very unclear on this.

Backlit Keyboard on Latitude E6410

Bought my machine used, so it didn't come with a warranty. Was strapped for cash after my HP fried, and wanted something to use. Anyway, the backlight on the keyboard won't stay constantly on, like I'm used to. BTW..very disgusted with HP for 3 years. Voiced my opinion to my pc-savy son, and he said that Dell is the step child of pc's. So, naturally I expected tech support, out of warranty like I had in the past with my other machines. Nope! No such animal. was told umpre-emptily that they cannot help me. I'm like ***?

Hope you can help. Right now, said backliight is on, but don't know for how long. Thanks.

XPS Studio M1640 Motherboard Compatibility Y503R vs. Y505R

Hey guys, I've been trying to get a motherboard replacement for an old XPS 1640.  The current board is a Y505R, DA0RM3MBAD0.

There appear to be very few Y505R boards, but have found several Y503R, with model DA0RM3MBAD0.  I am getting conflicting feedback from sellers on the compatibility and differences between the two and have not been able to find out what is the real difference.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Alienware Graphic Amplifier

Hello everyone.

I've got a little problem or it might be normally, i don't know. but i'd like to make sure otherwise there's gonna be some bad things in the future.

So the problem is that whenever i start my laptop (Alienware 15 R2) connected to the AMP, it randomly sometimes begins to restart, or it might be even twice, and then the windows loads up. Sometimes it stucks in windows loading screen but after 1-2 restarts it begins to work properly. I've also paid attention that if i unplug the AMP and retart the laptop, is might still restart 1-2 times.

Also i would like to mention that whenever everything loads up it works well.

Is that okay or there's some problem?

Thank you for your help.

XPS 15 (9550) No bootable device found

Hello,

A couple of month ago I bought myself a beautiful laptop. One of the first things I did was remove Windows 10 and install Debian-testiing. I had some minor problems with Uefi so I went back to Legacy.

Last week I thought it was time to completely move to eufi because most linux distributions support it now.

All went fine, but booting is a problem (Just GRUB _ on the screen and no reaction on keyboard input). I do have a USB stick with PMagic and with that I am able to boot my own Debian on the SSD.

Now I think I have found at least one of my problems. Starting my laptop with F2 I can see what my boot settings are: onle UEFI and the first drive to boot from is my SSD. That looks okay, but when i click the view button I get a strange seond row with the specs of my USB stick.

The second row should be: BBS (HD, PM951 NVMe Samsung 512GB)

I can remove the faulty boot option and add a new one, but I cannot change the second row and I think thats causing my "No bootable device found"

Is there some way I can reconfigure the SSD so that the second row gets corrected?

I hope you can understand my dutch school english

Thanks in advance,

XPS 13 9360 red grub boot menu

$

I tried different versions of Ubuntu to see what works and what doesn't. The last time I installed Ubuntu I specified 'nvme0' as the drive to boot form, instead of 'nvme0n1'. That was a mistake. When it rebooted after the installation was finished I found myself staring at a red grub boot menu telling me:

GNU GRUB  version 2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3

*If you are seeing this menu, your installation has failed.
Choose from the following options for debugging purposes:

 Single user mode
Automated installation of Ubuntu 16.04 (Default)

When choosing 'Automated installation' it sort of re-installs, without giving me any option of configuring the installation. It ends up booting in the same red grub boot menu.

Choosing 'Single user mode' makes it do some stuff and then I see:

Welcome to rescue mode! After logging in, type...
Press Enter for maintenance
(or press Control-D to continue): _

I press Control-D and a version of Ubuntu launches.

I also tried inserting the dell recovery USB-stick I made and then launching it via the bios boot menu. But again I go straight to the red grub boot menu.

Logically thinking I'd say grub need to be removed from the nvme0 disk. I have no clue how to do that though. I don't even know what it is actually. You'd say 'nvme0n1p1' through 4 are the partitions and 'nvme0n1' is the disk. But what then is 'nvme0'?

Anyone an idea what I could try?
