Unresponsive Touchpad in Dell Inspiron 3551

Just bought this laptop from a friend and installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

The installation went well until it booted up and I saw that my touchpad is not working. It used to work fine in my friend's Windows as well!

Here's my xinput:

I really want this to start working as my work at JustDoc is totally dependent on this and my productivity has gone down without a working trackpad.

P.S. I'm totally new to Ubuntu. TIA.

Confusing specs for Latitude 11 5175

I have a latitude 11 5175 but wish to increase the size of the SSD to 1TB. Several reviewers state that the maximum drive size is 512GB. How do they know this or is this only because that is all Dell could fit due to availability at design time ?

Secondly the only drive I can get that is 1TB has these specs -

SSD M.2 1TB PCIe NVMe. It happens to be an Intel.

Dells spec from a brochure claim this -

SSD M.2 512G PCIe NVMe (March 2016)

What on earth does this mean ? Although my unit does have a 128GB I haven't checked yet whether it is just an M.2 SATA. So can I make an assumption that as long as my unit was made after March 2016 that I can fit the PCIe 1TB unit ???

Note I haven't checked yet)

Installing a 2TB SATA3 HDD on my Precision 7510

I am planning on replacing the OEM installed 250GB Samsung PM871 SSD with a 2TB SATA3 HDD on my Precision 7510.

I understand that I must remove the SSD and fit the HDD in its place before I clone it. I have a Startech USB3 to SATA3 cable so that I can connect up the original Samsung drive externally. I also need to create a bootable USB3 flash drive with cloning software on it (USB2 flash drives NOT supported I understand because of the Intel Skylake chipset).

I am unfamiliar with GPT based UEFI systems and I'm wondering what else I should be aware of so that I run into as few problems as possible. Which is the most straightforward software to use for this?

Also I do know that the speed of the computer will suffer but I really need the extra space. I intend going back to solid state drives when they come down in price.

If you need any additional information please ask. And thank you for any assistance you can give.

Overheating caused serious screen issue on XPS - no longer usable

For months the XPS has been overheating and turning itself off while sitting on my desk. Not great but I could live with it. Recently, I went to visit a colleague and put the XPS in a protective sleeve without turning it off and for once it didn't turn off by itself when overheated and now the screen looks like the below. I am assuming this is a hardware problem? Works fine when plugged in to an external screen btw.

Any ideas?

When i connect my charger to the laptop the led in front turns on, that means laptop is charging, right. So when the battery is fully charged the led is turning off and after a while of using the laptop, battery remains on 100% and the led remains turned off. Well in this case, did laptop using power from the charger when the battery is fully charged or laptop keeps drain the power from battery and the charger keeps charging the battery.

Hi,

i have forgotten my Intel MEBx password because i didn't thought i needed it much.

Its from an Dell Latitude E7250.

but on my laptop it didn't work.

Its from Intels own site:

Dell Latitude E6400 intermittently no video and chaotic POST response

0
0

I have acquired an used Dell Latitude E6400 laptop that has a weird problem.

A couple of times, all of a sudden the video faded away, and didn't come back for dozen power cycles. Screen/inverter/video chip were ok though, as colors displayed just fine when I press D + power. Also, when video faded away, all LEDs on the board turned off, except those on the back of the screen.

Also, another time, it didn't POST at all. When powered up, it would spin drive and fan for a few seconds and shut down, leaving some LEDs on (HDD + WiFi) for another few seconds, after which the LEDs turns off, flickering for a split second. A couple of times, after all that, it even kept blinking all 3 keyboard LEDs = System board error. This happened when on battery, AC or both, so I don't think si power source. I think is either the power circuit or the logic circuit on system board.

Right now the laptop is fine. It passed all diagnostic tests, and power cycles are working perfect. But I'm sure the issue will pop up again at some point.

This is most likely a motherboard issue, but I'm wondering if it can be fixed without board replacement, if a simple fix is applicable.

So I have a couple of questions about general hardware design of system boards:

1. Is this common behavior for BIOS chip failure?

2. Vaguely, what is the control path between BIOS software and the system board LEDs? What would cause them to flicker while nothing else would? Could corrupt BIOS cause that?

3. Are there separated power "rails" for CPU-HDD/video/etc and could one work without the other?

As you can tell, I'm having a hack at it and I'm attempting to do a guesstimate exclusion diagnosis.

Thanks

Dell Stole My Samsung m.2 850 250 GB SSD

I was told it would be fine to ship it as the OS files were on the drive. So without worry I sent it in with the SSD in case of testing purposes. Only to receive it with a multitude of problems.

Problem 1. I received an email saying the motherboard was replaced.

Problem 2. The paper that included what was done to the laptop did not mention a motherboard replacement.

Problem 3. I turned the laptop on only to find it self diagnosing, only to open it up and see the SSD gone.

Problem 4. I contacted dell and now am being told that it was received without the SSD.

Dell this is horse ***, either your employees misplaced it and did not put it back into the laptop after replacing the motherboard, or it was stolen by an employee.

I either want someone to find it, or to be reimbursed for your failure to keep track of it, and telling the truth.

Dear all,

I'm using a Dell Lattitude E5400 on windows 10 OS.

I couldn't find the Windows 10 drivers in the Dell website.

As I remember, this laptop was shipped with a Windows vista OS and a Vista CD.

Since, I can't find my CD, I tried to find the Vista OS in Dell website.

Couldn't find that as well.

Precision 7510-No USB port works-No driver found-Win7 Pro 64 bit

I have a refurbished Precision 7510 with Windows 7 64bit installed (UK warranty until May 2019).

NONE of the USB ports are recognised by the OS evn though each time a device is plugged in the device powers up. The OS does not respond AT ALL. Device manager reports that the Universal Serial bus controller has found no driver.

The Intel USB3.0 extensible host controller driver (ver 4.0.6.60) does not seem to work and CAN NOT be uninstalled from control panel or anywhere else.

This laptop must have worked at some stage as the same model is still on sale online with the same OS (AND a Windows 10 pro License included). Is there ANY WAY to roll back the drivers or install a factory fresh copy of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (or Windows 10 Pro 64 bit if it's on offer) so that I have USB ports that actually work.

Also the Dell command update repeatedly installs the Intel rapid storage technology F6 (14.8.9.1053) and Intel management engine interface driver (11.0.0.1167) for some reason.

I am going to try and boot from a live usb image of Ubuntu 14.04 to see if the USB ports are recognised and actually functional.

I can suply my service tag if required.

Does the motherboard have a connector for it or am I stuck with the non-backlit version?

E5400 bios update

0

Dear all,

My Dell E5400's battery is not charging due to some reason.

I did a driver scan through Dell website and found an update E5400A17.exe.

Downloaded it as it seems that auto update is not working.

But, even when I run it manually, it says, that this bios update could not be run as there is 10% of battery.

I have connected my Dell laptop to a UPS. So I'm safe even on a power failure.

Could someone help me in overcoming this.

Regards,

Anuradha
