Alienware 17R4 memory crashes

Bought a new Alienware 17R4 just a few days ago.  Now when I try to do anything like play a few games from Facebook, I get an error message that there is not enough memory and the window crashes.  If I try to play World of Tanks, I can play a few games and then I get the same popup message and it crashes.  How is this possible?  Plenty of memory.  Used to play tons of games on my old, way outdated laptop.  What's the deal?

Dell XPS 9550 Maximizing Battery Life Cycle

I am using a Dell XPS 9550 primarily as a desktop.  By that, I mean, it is pretty much always plugged in and I rarely need to move it.  In order to keep from totally burning out the battery, I have completely pulled the battery out and just use the laptop on AC power.  When I need to travel, I'll put the battery in.  With the number of screws needed to do this every time, it is super inconvenient, so I wanted to know if there was a better alternative.

The BIOS battery options include a "Primarily AC Use" setting that says it is for users who mainly use the laptop plugged in.  Does anyone know how this actually works?  If I am on AC power with the battery charging and it hits 100%, what happens to the battery if I continue to leave the thing plugged in for an extended session, say 6 hours?  Is it just constantly running down to 99% and then charging back up to 100%?  And how does the AC Use option change this?

It would be nice if there was simply a way to disable battery charging completely without pulling the thing out, but if there is some good alternative, i would love to hear about it.

Thanks!

Latitude 3540 Safe Mode

Hi, I have a Dell Latitude 3540 on Windows 10 and I can't get into safe mode.

I hit F8 at boot and it brings me to a screen that has windows defender offline on it.  If I either cancel that or let the scan run, it reboots again after.

If I have multiple failed reboots, that also takes me to windows defender offline.

I can't get into windows due to a blue screen each time (I know the problem if I could only get into safe mode to resolve it).

How do I get to the recovery menu instead of windows defender offline?

Any assistance is much appreciated!

Dell Inspiron 1012 factory restore problem

I've just found out my very old 1012 for my kid to play with. I'm pretty sure there's a Partition Q which should be a factory recovery image. But unfortunately F8 is useless and I can't get it back to factory restoring. I think it might because it's been updated from win7 to win10 before. So is there any chance to restore it back to the original win7 factory status now please?

Cant wake up from Sleep

Hi All,

My boss just bought a XPS 15 9550 last September.  There are a few cases each week that it does not wake up from sleep.  All drivers are up to date.  I did an online check with Dell for hardware check and all seems fine.

The computer goes into some state that the screen is black, the computer is running and there is nothing else but holding the power button down to restart it.

It's frustrating.

Chaning default graphics adapter at Inspiron 3542

Hello,I have Dell Inspiron 3542 with dual boot (win10 edu + kubuntu) installed. Laptop by default had NVIDIA graphics cards and Intel integrated one. Few days ago, I booted laptop just like I normally do, but at the boot time I've heard 6 beeps (assume POST ones), and found out that that means problems with graphics card. Windows supports this; it's doesn't recognize Nvidia graphics card at all (but I still see Intel Graphics 4000). My question is how do I stop beeping at the boot time ? I've looked at BIOS (currently have A12 version) and couldn't find anywhere to switch default graphics adapter. Moreover, I've tried to enter BIOS via Win 10 (Control Panel -> Recovery -> Advanced startup -> Restart now -> Troubleshoot -> Advanced options ) but couldn't find "EUFI Firmware Settings". Note that I don't want to "fix" my graphics card, just to look for integrated graphics (intel) during POST.

If you need anymore information, I'll have happy to provide.

M6800 How to install fingerprint reader ??

0
0

Hy,

my system details are:

Dell Precision M6800 + Windows 7 Pro X64

I had a painful and finally successful installation  of the fingerprint reader and controlvault about one year ago, using the following in this order:

  1. Dell Data Protection | Security Tools-1.6.1.1055
  2. Dell ControlVault Driver_94KTC _A18_64b_ZPE
  3. Dell ControlVault Firmware_WJ0XJ_A38_ZPE

Now I had to reinstall my system and I tried to use the updated drivers:

  • Dell Data Protection| Security Tools 1.10.1.16
  • Dell ControlVault Driver WDRHG_WN64_3.3.14.68_A19_01
  • Dell ControlVault Firmware GDFGW_3.3.15.0_A40_ZPE

When I finish installing the ControlVault Driver, in Device Manager/Biometric devices, the fingerprint sensor has a yellow triangle.

Moreover, when I try to update the firmware (ushupgrade.exe), I get the following message:

This program will update the ControlVault firmware
from 3.0.304.0 to 3.4.10.0.

Once started, do not interrupt process.

Going to stop Host Services.

Going to stop Host and DCP tasks.

Checking current ControlVault status.
Found ControlVault Chip Type: 5882 B0 CustID 1
ERROR: Missing files necessary for complete firmware update.
ERROR: Could not update ControlVault firmware.
Obtain complete firmware update package and try again.

All I ask for is a clear and straight forward way to install this *** fingerprint sensor. I used to use it a lot in the past, as quick login, but now it just drives me crazy knowing that I can't use it anymore.

Thank you very much.

Hello! I am back having the same problem as i have for awhile now. For quite some time , like a week, my laptop had become a nuissance to me. My apps kept on crashing, occassional looping and freezing, and the most horrible one, experiencing bluescreen.

For the past the bluesvreen shown were : system page, memory mgt, system service

One recommended to remove my other external harddrive which is a tb of WD. It clicks and clicks and after removing it awhile ago , I was confident it'll be better from then on but after leaving my laptop for an hour, it restarted again and had the same problems as this had from last week. I boughty laptop 2 months ago and i never got any problems not until now. Can anyone help me?

I live in Germany and I have just bought a new Dell Vostro 5568 online through notebookbilliger.de. However this laptop does not have the Fingerprint reader. I wonder why because Vostro 5000 series always provide that?

Inspiron 7720 - can't access BIOS options - Reinstall Windows7

0
0

My previous post seems to have gone poof so I'll try again. Mods - if this is in the wrong place, then please move it.

Non tech person here, so be gentle. Sorry the post is so long,  but I don't know what's important so I'm including everything.

Inspiron 7720 CPU Type: Intel Core i7-3610QM CPU 2.30GHz, (Not sure if I can post the SvceTag# here or not)

I was attempting to do a clean reinstall of Windows 7 Home using a Dell supplied Flash Drive; (I also have the Dell CD's for the OS and Utilties/Drivers, all from a Dell assisted reinstall last year).  I was able to retrieve the Windows key code, wipe out the partitions, and install Windows. Yay me. I was all set with the correct order to do the updates and download Ninite programs......until it got to the point where it restarted and then there was black screen and the message No Operating System. Great..

I was advised elsewhere to turn off the SECURE BOOT and UEFI options in the BIOS but I don't see those options anywhere under Main or Advanced. When I press F12  or F2 at startup, the setup option takes me to screens which looks a bit different from the BIOS Utility Setup  images I see online Some fields are the same but nowhere to change the two  options.

I  vaguely remember the UEFI thing coming up during a reinstall last year but I have no idea how to access those options now. (that was done on the phone with Dell Support).

Hopefully some of the following is pertinent to getting me into some advanced BIOS options (magic key combo), and/or figuring out which drive I'm supposed to be using. l.included the source of the info.

From the Phoenix SecureCore Tiano Setup:

BIOS version is A01 (who knew you were supposed to update this?!?)

  • Fixed HDD ST100LM024 HN101MBB-(SO) 1000GB

  • SATA ODD HL-DT-DT DVD+-RW GT60N- (S3) ATAPI (Under Advanced : SATA Operation is AHCI)

  • Second HDD None

  • mSATA Device SAMSUNG SSD PM830 nSATA 32GB-(S2) 32GB

In the Preboot System Assessment Configuration:

  • Hard Drive 0 as the 1TB

  • Hard Drive 1 as the 32GB

  • Boot Path = MBR of Hard Drive 1

Also, prior to deleting the partitions, both hard drives were deemed  healthy.  I printed out a DiskMgmt report (have no idea where got it from). I just noticed in the bottom right corner of the Assessment screen, it says "Build42204, UEFI ROM"- no option to change it, though.

After the CLEAN command during the Windows install, the LIST DISK looked like this:

  • Disk 0 29GB
  • Disk 1 931GB
  • Disk 2 7680MB (I assume this was my flashdrive?)

So Hard Drive 1 doesn't necessarily correspond to Disk 1 (or any sequential order), right? Brilliant.

I also read that  Windows7 should be installed on Disk0. But in my case, that would be the smaller drive (29GB). The options available in BOOT MENU are Removable / HardDrive / CD-DVD / SecondHardDrive / Network.

So which one would I place at the top of the list? Very confusing. I've installed the software on both drives, played with switching the boot order, but I keep getting the same error message.

Any ideas for me finding this elusive BIOS utility/options?  To further complicate this, I'm not home am doing this from a public library.

Thanks again for taking the time to assist me. If you need any further info, I'll try to find it.
