Battery problem?

I have an Inspiron 1545 about 10 yrs old. I almost always use it with the AC adapter. About 6 months ago I started using it on battery several times a week and found the original battery would discharge very quickly - then a message appeared saying the battery needed to be replaced. I replaced it with a generic battery which worked fine, and I had about 2 hours of battery time before it discharged. Over time, the battery discharges quicker and quicker until now I have about a half hour of battery life.

Yesterday, I tried to use the laptop on battery and after about 10 min. it abruptly shut down - no low battery warning, just suddenly a black screen and power light off. I turned it back on, the battery was at 56%, and it ran for about 5 min before shutting down. Next time I turned it on, the battery was at 36% and it shut of almost immediately.

I connected the AC adapter later and charged it up to 100% and ran it off the adapter for the rest of the day and left it plugged in all night. Today, I tried to run the laptop off the battery and it turned off after about 10 min. with the battery at 86%. I plugged in and went to Dell support where I ran a battery diagnostic and it reported the battery passed.

For what its worth, I really like this computer - very, very few problems and those have been easily fixed using both Dell support and Microsoft support. I run the Microsoft security essentials scan for spyware and malware weekly, and periodically run an advertising malware scan and cleaner.

Is this battery failing or is this a problem with the computer?

15 Month old Dell Inspiron 5758 won't turn on

15 month old laptop worked fine yesterday, won't start today. The screen stays black, the laptop itself completely silent. No beeps, no fan, no sound a tall.

Green light IS on on the adapter, but no light on the front edge of the laptop. I have tried the recommended sequence of releasing static energy (remove battery, unplug from adapter, push on button for 60 seconds) and it doesn't work. I have brought it to the Microsoft Store at the mall, and they have tried multiple alternate power/adapter cords, with no success.

It sits on my desk - never travels (not to work, not to the coffee shop, not ever), never dropped, no spills. No sense of processor problems. Just won't turn on.

I called the out of warranty line at Dell and they said I could mail it to them and for $259 they will troubleshoot and replace the motherboard and see if that helps. Whatever repairs they do will have a 90 day warranty.

So here is the question for you: At the Microsoft Store they have an exact replacement for $600. Should I:

(A) Send off my computer for Dell repairs and hope that I get another 15 months out of it before something breaks again?

(B) Buy a new Inspiron and pay for the longest possible warranty this time?

(C) Migrate to Mac?

I have an i7, 4k, 512Gb laptop. My screen was flickering a bit. Dell sent a technician to replace the screen. When the technician installed a new screen, the keyboard including caps lock is working, and the screen is not responding at all. The technician installed the older screen that was flickering, the problem is the same. What is the solution?

The motherboard is bad in my Inspiron 1501. I have been looking for a replacement and have found two different ones. How do I find which one fits mine?  Also is there a processor upgrade for the replacement motherboard?

Dell Precision M4300 CPU upgrade help.

Hey there everyone, I'm curious to find out if the T9400 CPU will work in my Dell Precision M4300 laptop. Currently, I am on the latest BIOS update with a T7300 inside, the T9400 has a 45nm CPU and the T7300 is a 65nm. I've just put an order in for a T9400 and I'm hoping it'll work inside this machine. I just decided to put up a post here just to confirm if it will or not...

The subject says it all. I have been unable to find out what power supplies match my laptop. Anybody knows, or knows where to find such information?

Fan still runs 5447

My wife is using an Inspiron 14-5447 and we have noticed a problem where the fan turns back on after shut down and stand by when the laptop is left in areas where heat is hard to dissipate.

A couple of examples are if she shuts the system down and immediately puts the laptop in her carry case, or shuts down and leaves the laptop on the couch. Once the laptop is either taken out of the case or picked up the fan will shut off within 30 seconds to a minute.

We have tried to look for the Intel Power Management feature to down grade or even disable, updating the BIOS, changing what happens when you close the lid. All with no success.

The problem seems to be a catch 22. We think the fan is turning on to try and expel the excess heat, but by the fan being on for hours, possibly even overnight the base is warm to the touch even with the laptop being off for more than 8 hours. So it looks as though the system is trying to exhaust heat it is creating for itself.

It is hard to recreate the situation, but we have found when the laptop is on a hard flat surface this does not seem to be a problem.

Let me start off by saying I love the capabilities of this laptop, but that's where it stops. I got this laptop a few months ago and it has encountered problem after problem, during which process Dell has met it with complacency and inefficiency.

The original laptop I purchased just refused to turn on one day, I sent it in to Dell and over a month later of constant calling of customer and tech support where I received little to no assistance until I was forced to get upset and ask for a supervisor. Their solution was to not repair my computer or send me a new one, but to send me a refurbished model (I understand that is the policy).

All good right? No, just 2 weeks of having this refurbished model, the battery fails entirely, rendering the laptop a desktop (heaven forbid if I travel). Either Dell has built a model that they cannot support and should discontinue its production, or they are entirely incompetent in repairing, replacing, or refurbishing this model. I will never be purchasing a Dell product again, as I can only imagine that this battery repair will require me to send in this refurbished model yet again -- another month or more without a computer. No one should purchase this model, despite its capabilities, and I highly recommend that Dell look into this model as clearly they are not adept at fixing it.

Dell XPS 17 L702x: blank screen, no splash, no bios, no beeps, no boot

Hi everyone,

I have a Dell XPS 17 L702x that I was prepping to sell.  The basic specs are:

Intel i7-2760QM

16GB of RAM (4GB x4)

NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M with 1080p 3D screen

500GB 7200 RPM HDD x2

A19 BIOS

Windows 10 Pro

Like I said, I was prepping to sell the laptop.  The laptop was functioning properly.  I had wiped the HDDs clean and was in the middle of performing a clean install of Windows 10 pro from a USB drive.  I have done this before and never had a problem.  The install started correctly. I selected the drive that I wanted, and the installer wrote the files to the drive.  The laptop then restarted.  The power came back on, the fan started up, and I could hear the optical drive and HDDs spin up.  However, the screen stayed blank/black, and the Dell splash screen never appeared.  The activity light on the USB drive never comes on.  The normal functions keys do nothing.

Here are some troubleshooting things that I have tried:

I removed the RAM and HDDs.  I get the typical 2 beeps from not having any RAM.  Motherboard seem ok.

I have tested the RAM in my work Latitude E6430.  The E6430 will boot with the RAM from the L702x.  The RAM seems ok.

I have tested each stick of RAM one at a time in various slots in the L702x.  Same problem, blank screen, and no beeps.

I have connected the HDDs to the E6430 with a SATA to USB cable.  I can format and read/write from/to the HDDs.  The HDDs seem ok.

I removed the top cover and removed the button battery to reset the BIOS.  I held the power button down for an extended period of time.  Reassembled everything.  When I first power the laptop back on I get 5 beeps for removing the battery.  I get the same blank screen when I power it back up a second time.

I used Rufus to create a bootable DOS USB.  Holding down END and plugging in the power cable will cause the laptop to start up, but I'm still left with a blank screen.

At this point I have run out of ideas.  Please let me know if there is anything else that I can try.

Thank you in advance!

Problem With Dell USB 3.0 Docking Station

After installing the appropriate driver from the Dell  Website, I connected my Inspiron 17-778 to two external monitors. Soon thereafter I began to receive an error message and a restart. The message indicated:

KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED, which I looked up and found that it signaled a problem "when a driver tries to close static streams for USB 3.0 devices.

Is there a fix for this issue?

Inspiron 13 7000 series - Touchscreen bubbles and losing control of the screen

$

The last post I have been able to locate on this topic was in Feb 2016 where it appears another user was reporting. Mine has had the problem since just after purchase but unfortunately I could not send the laptop back to Dell during the service warranty period because I was in school and could not be without the laptop for that long. Now that I have finished I would like to use the touchscreen functionality but is impossible due to the bubbles floating across the screen and then the erratic opening and closing of windows. The retail store where I purchased has an extended warranty but that company requires troubleshooting with a technician ( all done- no fix) up to and including factory reset prior to sending out a technician. I pushed back at that point and said no I want to investigate before I do a factory reset.

Does anyone know if Dell has acknowledged the issue or offered a fix? If so how would I go about "proving" this is a known issue?

TIA

Sleep glitch in Inspiron I5559

Hello,

This Windows 10 laptop has trouble awakening from sleep. My understanding is that it should wake up when I press any key or move my bluetooth mouse, but these don't work. Clicking the touchpad or pressing the power button are the only ways to wake it up. I've been through all the settings to no avail. Any thoughts?

Thanx,

Ron

My computer is exactly one month old.  I have move it to tablet mode 5 times.  The sixth time the left hinge literally snapped and disconnected from the computer.

I have always been a Dell customer, but I will not purchase from them again.  I see many people have had this issue.

It is not because of wear and tear. It is because this model has a defective hinge and dell should honor replacements.  I am so disappointed in the craftsmanship of this computer.  Dell used to be number 1... not any more in my book.

Now I have to deal with sending it somewhere to get the hinge repaired and be without a computer for 2 weeks.  Thanks Dell for standing by your products.  NOT

I will never recommend a Dell purchase to any person I know.

Inspiron 7720 unseated harddrive and video card error code 2000-0332

Hi all,

For past month, ive had issue with unseated HDD. When it first happened, I ran diagnostics in BIOS which didnt recognise a HDD and also gave me video card error code 2000-0332 "video memory integrity test discrepancy".

I took out HDD and slotted it back in. Laptop booted windows fine. Its happened on and off for past month but now seems to be permanent. Tried using the other HDD dock but it still wont recognise the drive. Basically is it likely that the HDD is fried? Also, I am hoping that the fact I can load in BIOS is a sign that the motherboard is fine, would that be an accurate assumption?

Edit - can stripped screws be removed with the right pliers?

Thanks,

So I dropped a closed jar of peanut butter on my Dell Inspiron 3147 and the screen went black, so I held the power key until it shut off (which took longer than normal) When I turned it back on, it made a few beeping noises(within the computer not the speakers). I tried hitting F1 to try and reboot, I hit F2 for setup utility and had no idea what to do there. I hit F5 to run onboard diagnostics and everything came back fine. But I didn't do the further diagnostic testing.

I don't know what to do at this point., could the hard drive be damaged from the jar falling onto it? . Please help!

I've been looking around everywhere. and not only don't I see a solution, I don't see anyone else with my problem.  Both buttons on my touchpad act as if they're the left button.  It is not a mechanical problem.
