The lowest setting for precision 5510 is not low enough. When the room is dark the display looks so bright. How can the display brightness be lowered to zero. In the MacBook Air I have the lowest is zero. The lowest display brightness should be zero on this laptop.

Studio XPS 1640 won't boot after memory upgrade from 4gb to 8GB.

Greetings.

I just upgraded the RAM on my laptop Dell XPS Studio 1640, from 4GB to 8GB.  I replaced original 2BG with PNY 4GB DDR3 1600 PC3-12800 - CL11-11-11-28 1.5V SODIM, part# 64C0JKHNJ.

After installing the new RAM I rebooted the laptop, and it flicked a couple times, and disppayed a message indicating a BAD POOL HEADER.  After rebooting, the system gets into a loop preparing a repair.

I re-installed the original RAM and the laptop works fine.

Your help will be truly appreciated.

Eduardo.

How do I know which Drivers to Update - General question

Hi, first time user of the forum. I have Inspiron 15 7568 on Win 10. When I go to the driver download centre, it recognizes PC and prefills service tag and comes up with Drivers but does not indicate if my PC actually requires these. For example, when i install one of these and return to the Driver download page, the latest driver is still indicated as a download option.

Another question is that when I just use the Dell apps on win 10 to see the status of my PC it sais that all important drivers are up to date. Bit confused. If someone could advise on how they keep there Dell up to date it would be appreciated.

Thanks J

Noticing when I had a battery problem, the trouble shooting tips wanted to install detection software. It's all Windows based though. The same with drivers, etc, and other support tools.

There are these articles here though - http://www.dell.com/learn/au/en/audhs1/campaigns/dell-linux-ubuntu-en

M3800 really slow performance

Hi all, been a while since I posted an issue on this forum which suggests I have generally been happy with my Dell products.

I recently had the anniversary update installed and felt a few months later that I should perform a clean install.  Having done this, I just cannot get the laptop to perform like it should.

Before I go into the ins and outs of it, I feel like I have already had this issue with pre-anniversary update when I had done a clean install and gut feeling was that it was an install order or driver that resolved it but I failed to note down the solution and so here I am.  (Reason I mention this is I do not think it's anni edition related).

So once the initial OS is installed and first boot occurs, you instantly notice it's not smooth.  Windows open very choppy, even the start menu.  This rules out any installed software such as antivirus or the likes as at this point, it's pure vanilla.

My driver installation order is as follows:

Chipset, (10.1.1.18), Serial ATA, Intel management engine (11.0.0.1158)
Intel thermal chipset 10605.221
Intel graphics: win64_154028.4501
Quadro graphics 375.3}
Audio 6.0.1.6098
Touchpad: 19.0.9.4
Bluetooth BT_19.10.1635_64_Win10
Wifi: Wireless_19.20.0_PROSet64_Win10
Motion: 4.11.67
Airplane switch: 1.4.1

Anything else required comes from the M3800-WIN10-A01-1Y8HP cab file Dell have provided.

I usually reboot once all are installed rather than on request but in this case I've rebooted on request.  Done this several times with the same sort of result - a choppy, slow machine.

Spec: M3800, i7-4702HQ @ 2.20GHz 16GB Ram
Primary drive: Crucial CT480M500SSD3 SSD latest firmware and disk checks suggest it's fine including smart/error rates etc.
Secondary drive: LITEON LCS-512M6S SSD again on latest firmware, no errors.
Latest Bios already installed

Event viewer: No errors apart from the usual self-inflicted warnings.

Even just hitting start and typing in system, device manager or calc you can feel is really sluggish

So what have I missed?

Bad drivers?  Bad order? Should I stick with the CAB file for drivers and rely on updates rather than getting the latest as I have done with video (direct from intel/nvid) and wireless for instance?  Anyone had the same experience?

What is strange is once you start an operation, it's does not feel slow.  For instance, loading up windows explorer will take ages, navigating around feels slow and sluggish but if you copy/paste a file, its lightning quick.

Task manager shows CPU at almost 0% and RAM at under 20% for the most part.  Never peaks even during the pauses

And finally, I do believe it is software.  Pre-formatting, it was fine - I just felt I wanted a clean start again as I had been doing a fair bit of testing outside of virtual machines and directly on the system.

Appreciate any advice!

new xps13 unable to register for warranty because service tag not found + unable to reach customer service

I purchased a new xps13 from dell over two weeks ago.  Currently the laptop is working fine, however, I've tried tried to register the laptop under 'my products' multiple times since receiving the laptop.  Whenever I try to enter the service tag, it keeps giving me an error "Products not found. There’s no match for the Service Tags that were entered."  At first I thought maybe it was because the laptop was new, but it has been 2 weeks now and I'm still getting the same message.

Not only that, but I've been trying to contact dell through email for 2 weeks now and I always get the same "you will get a response in 24hour" reply but nobody ever replies.  I feel like the biggest moron right now because I paid for 3 years of 'premium support' and you won't even answer a freaking email.  I'm pretty close to just returning this laptop and buying a piece of *** macbook because at least apple responds to support requests.

After updating to BIOS A15, the keys to my Dell Latitude E5440 get "stuck" again with Linux. This has been a problem for many frustrating months back when I originally bought it, then solved by a BIOS update eventually, and now back again with A15. A14 worked fine.

Inspiron 15R SE continious beep sound startup

Hello,

I would like to present my problem with my Inspiron 15R SE laptop, bought in september of 2013.

This last week, I've regularly been experiencing a beeping sound at the startup of my laptop. When I turn the laptop on, three buttons light up and turn off again, and the laptop screen remains black. A soon as that happens, the beeping sound occurs. The beeping sound is continiously and indefinitely untill I decide to turn the laptop off forcefully by pressing the power button for 3 seconds.

I haven't downloaded any software in the last three months, nore have I installed any hardware on my computer.

Today I did start the ePSA procedure at the startup. I selected the quick test and the thorough tests. My system passed them all. No fails, no system errors.

I don't have the patience to go through the complete history of this community board for usefull suggestions and tips. That's why I want to ask what sollutions there could be for this problem. I can send the Service Tag of my system if that's necessary.

I'm eagerly looking forward to your responses.

Kind regards,

Kaazi

[Inspiron 14z] How may I disable my keyboard?

$

I'm using a Inspiron 14z 5423. After a crash, the keyboard started malfunctioning and typing things itself. Although it still has some reaction while pressing some of the keys, it's completely unusable.

I tried disabling it through device manager but uninstalling the driver gave no effect. Trying to install an incompatible driver also didn't work since it didn't give me an option to choose a driver when I pressed updating it. I tried to find its driver(i8042prt.sys) and delete it but it refused. I tried using PNPutil.exe and devcon.exe in cmd to disable it but also didn't do anything.

I tried to open up the notebook but the nail was unable to be removed. Seems that the crash damaged some parts that maybe responsible for the issue.

Are there any more options for me to disable the keyboard?Maybe through BIOS?  The other parts are working normally except for the touchpad which I don't bother to use.

repeated BSODs after each Windows 10 update preventing me to work

This is really annoying, I own a Dell Latitude laptop since last year  and most of the times after a windows update it goes in BSOD or fails to start completely at random, mostly when  I am teaching  or I am on a train and need to work on  my laptop.

The laptop works one day and then the next it does not

Dell support has changed hard drive, RAMs, AC cord and device, to no avail. The computer passes all the  tests,

I am at loss. I need to have a reliable machine for work and I think Dell should put more effort in  supporting  their clients

I have  put my minidumps and reports here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0qibbcf9rd1p99e/AAAHmMYbZdSgTUUW3esuvg1ha?dl=0

I hope you can give relevant and final advice. Failing that, you will hear from my *** because the amount of work hours I am losing because of this is seriously damaging.

I look forward to hearing from you soon  with a reliable solution, as I am not the only one  having these  recurring problems.

Alienware 17 R4 (2017 model), multiple Monitors / pcie question

Hi Guys,

Right, after looking at various models, i've decided upon an Alienware 17 to replace my trusty M14r2.

Can anyone answer the following questions though please..

a) can it run 2 external monitors and the internal panel at the same time?

b) If it does, can it do thsi on the integrated intel chipset, or does it need to use the Discrete Graphics

c) is there a huge difference between the AMD and nVidia options? I'm not really going to play games on it, its mainly for web development - I know I could get a Dell as its not really for gaming, but I just like the Alienware brand.

d) how many channels the does the PCI-E SSD use?

e) I'm interested in teh 1TB PCIE SSD option, is it a Samsung 961 based drive?

Heat Issues 2016 m15r3

During normal usage - browsing the internet, watching videos, browsing forums etc, i see temps around 55-65.

In BF1, CPU will sit around 85-90 in a cool 75 degree room. If i don't use a cooling pad, the computer will shut down due to overheating (spiking). all software based hardware tests pass (system support), but it's a bit annoying to have to use a full blown cooling pad. I understand this is a very demanding game.

Is this normal for this machine? my previous i7-6700 laptop ran significantly cooler. I'm wondering if it's worth my time to open it up and check the thermal paste. All fans are also clear of dust and debris, it's a brand new machine.

Dell Inspiron 15 3558, changed boot mode to Legacy and back again, now it can't find the OS

As per the title, I changed this laptop's boot mode from "UEFI - Secure Boot" to "Legacy" in order to do a boot-time virus scan from USB (with ESET - it didn't find anything fwiw).

However, when I changed boot mode back to "UEFI - Secure Boot", it says it can no longer find any OS.

When I use a Win10 disc to boot into rescue mode, if I go into the command prompt and use dir, I can see that all the files are still there, so the drive hasn't been wiped (thank god) or anything.

I've tried using Win10's default "Startup Repair" option, which doesn't appear to work. I've tried using bootrec /fixmbr and /fixboot, and even /rebuildbcd, none of which are helping it find the OS.

Any thoughts?

Dell XPS 9343 Consistent Blue Screen Problems

$

So I get two sort of blue screen errors: Memory management, and bcmwl. This has been happening on and off since last year and I'm not sure what is going on. I worked with support last year and all we did was just update all of my drivers - problem went away for a few months but then the blue screening starts coming back. I can't identify an actual pattern on what causes this, tried going through event viewer to find some sort of trigger I am really just not sure. I have the latest wifi driver given from Dell's driver website - and I believe after running the "Identify drivers" search engine off of Dell's drivers website, it recently just pointed me to update my graphics driver as well as install some applications (Which I haven't done as of yet).

Ran system file checker as well as Window's memory diagnostic showing no problems found on both ends, please help - really tired of getting these blue screens
