Lines on laptop screen

$

I have two dell xps 12 9q33 touchscreen laptops.  Bought around 6 months apart in 2014/15. I now have on both laptops two vertical lines one pixel wide running down the screen about 4 cm apart. I have contacted dell by phone and they quote me 300 quid per laptop to repair. Personally I think that's poor service since both laptops are doing it. I have checked both laptops using diagnostics etc to determine the problem. All point towards a broken screen. Tested on an external display and the lines disappear. Is this just real bad luck or do I have a case. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Recently my external hard drive failed and I have replaced it.  When I tried to set up my file history I am having trouble.  Under control panel file history is listed on G drive, but my new external hard drive is F.  I put it in the same slot as the old drive and now am trying to change the drive but it isn't working.

Help!  I must be doing something wrong, but cannot figure it out.

Alienware 17 R3 - not charging during game play even though it is plug

When playing games, the computer drains the battery and noticed that the battery is not charging based on the icon at the bottom right, after ignoring it, the 10% windows warning of low bat appeared and it keeps draining because it is not charging. During this scenario, my power adapter is plug-in with lit on. I dont really know what is wrong with the unit because, if you close the game itself, it can charge normally. Im guessing that it doesnt produce power to the battery while charging at a game play.

another thing, contacted chat support and got remote support, he was connected and he was in another session then waited for 20mins. without solving anything. just wasted my time for 20mins.

any thoughts or solutions that i could do it myself? thanks.

I just bought this laptop 2 weeks ago and I'm already having problems. :( My spacebar is making this terribly high pitched squeaking sound every time I press down on the space bar which is driving me absolutely crazy. For a $2000 laptop, this completely unacceptable! Has anyone had this problem before or does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?

I have a Dell Inspiron 5548 running Windows 8.1 and it has an Intel Core i5-5220U processor. Intel Turbo Boost is not working on my computer. I have tried re-installing the Intel Chipset Driver multiple times (with and without Intel Speed Step enabled in the UEFI), and each time after successfully installing Intel Turbo Boost still does not work. How can I make Intel Turbo Boost work on my PC?

Thank you.

Dell Vostro 1015, well out of warranty. Plug it in and get an immediate flash code on the battery light on the front of the laptop. Not even getting to POST. Alternating 1 blue and 4 amber quick flashes, followed by various blue flash patterns ( which I know makes no sense but I am failing to find a pattern ). Unable to find any useful docs, can anyone help?

Inspiron 17R 7720 - Clone mSATA SSD + HDD to SSHD or just HDD to SSHD?

$

I have an Inspiron 17R 7720 with a 32GB mSATA SSD and a 1TB HDD. It is my understanding that my computer boots off of the mSATA drive and runs some my of my software off that drive as well, while the bulk of my software and user data are stored on the slower HDD. Amazon has 1TB SSHDs in the $80 price range with claimed throughput 2X that of the HDD.

Question 1 - I'm not a gamer, most of my "computing" is surfing the web, MS Excel and Word, and occasional spurts of editing/post processing digital photographs, probably less than 10% of the time spent on the computer. Will I see any noticeable performance improvement by upgrading to a SSHD?

Question 2 - Were I to upgrade to a SSHD, should I clone my mSATA SSD + HDD to the SSHD or just the HDD to the SSHD?

Question 3 - Obviously cloning just the  HDD to SSHD would be fairly straightforward and easily accomplished; what would be involved in cloning both my mSATA SSD + HDD to SSHD?

Question 4 - Assuming I do replace either just the HDD or both drives with a SSHD, how does the BIOS recognize the changed drive(s)? Do I have to manually edit the BIOS configuration to reflect the change or is it automatically detected during the system boot?

Docking port and fingerprint reader

Hi, Can you help me? My Dell E6440 has some problems under Windows 10.

I bought 2 Dell E-Port docking stations, and after the firts dock when I turn on the computer or even if I restart it it shows me a dialog that I have to restart the computer because of some hardware change. It does not matter if the computer is on the docking station or not. After dialog come up I have to wait like 3 sec and the screen start flashing. It flashes 2-3 times, and after the last flash disconnect everything. USB devices, thekeyboard in the laptop, tocuhpad, and fingerprint reader.
2 second later everything come back except the fingerprint reader, and I can not use the fingerprint reader.
Dou you have any solution for this flashing?

I have the A14 BIOS and the last downloadable drivers from the Dell support site.

thanks, csaba

E5570 Not Reading Smart Cards

$

I have two Dell Latitude E5570 laptops that are unable to ready any DoD CAC smart cards (256b). When i insert the smart card while attempting to send a digitially signed email address a message appears that says "No valid certificates found"

I think my problem has to do with my smart card middle ware. I am trying to use Active Client 6.2 and it does not see the certificates either. I have tried the built in smart card reader and an external USB smart card reader, but neither work. I have tried three different DoD CAC cards and all have the same result.

Do i need the Dell Data Protection suite instead of the ActiveClient software to read smart cards in this E55770 laptop? Or is there something else im missing?

Inspiron 17R 7720 mSATA question

$

My Inspiron 17R 7720 has a 32GB mSATA SSD. I had thought, apparently incorrectly, that this drive was a boot drive containing the OS and was used to provide a faster OS startup. In response to another thread I posted a responder stated my mSATA drive was a cache and did not contain any programs. So does that mean that there is no data permanently stored on the mSATA drive? When the system is powered off, all the data on the mSATA is lost? If so what is the purpose of larger mSATA drives? I see them upwards of 128GB, what would a larger mSATA drive do that my 32GB drive won't?

Laptop shutting down

My laptop (a latitude 6520), displays a black screen and shuts down without warning or explanation. It does so within 20 minutes of booting up. Sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less.

I connected my laptop to a monitor and set the display on the monitor only. Within a few minutes, the monitor went to a yellow screen and my laptop again shut down.

Windows Event Viewer doesn't provide any insight, other than an improper reboot.

I ran the BIOS test and and the LCD cable test failed with error code 2000-0415. The display works fine before the laptop shuts down. Is this failure causing the shutdowns?

Win10 1607 breaks Dell 5558, "Your PC is offline..."

$

Hi all,

My daughter has a Dell 5558 laptop, and since the Anniversary Update a month ago, it is stuck at the welcome screen. It asks for the most recent password or PIN, then says that's wrong and "Your PC is offline. Sign in with the last password used on this PC." Typing in the last password or PIN does not work. I've found advice saying that plugging it into the network with Ethernet would solve it, but it doesn't. I made a USB recovery stick earlier, but ... she doesn't know where it is. So is there a workaround for this? I can't even log in to run recovery. F12 only offers the HD, not the recovery system. I'd like to roll it back, but I can't get to system restore and the previous restore points, either.

Any ideas appreciated!

Randall
